Gai'A Assyrtiko Wild Ferment paired with mizuna ... - Food & Style

Gai'A - Assyrtiko Wild Ferment 2011

The picturesque Greek island of Santorini is world-famous for its limpid, turquoise waters, its breathtaking views, its white-washed villages perched atop vertiginous cliffs, and its volcano, which has shaped the island?s history in dramatic ways.

But there?s another thing Santorini boasts: a noble white grape known as Assyrtiko ? a grape as distinct as the island that hosts it.

To say that growing conditions in Santorini are good for vines would be an understatement; they are, in fact, ideal. Volcanic, porous soil that is, to this day, phylloxera-free; an unsurpassed amount of sunshine during the growing season; sea mists that are the only moisture the vines get all summer long; low-yielding root stocks, some more than 80 years old ? these are some of the unique conditions that help create rare and precious wines.

There are several wineries on the island and Gai?A Wines is one of the most respected. Co-owner Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, one of Greece?s leading winemakers, has gained international acclaim in the last few years. When you taste his wines you?ll instantly understand why.

Gai?A is well known for their stunning Assyrtikos. Since 1994 the winery has been producing their signature Thalassitis and Thalassitis Oak Fermented with great success. But today it is a more recent experiment ? Gai?A?s Assyrtiko Wild Ferment ? that I want to showcase. As the name suggests, instead of using commercial yeast to ferment the wine, Paraskevopoulos uses strictly wild yeast ? yeast that lives naturally on the skin of the grapes and in the vineyard.

To make the Wild Ferment?s journey to your glass even more interesting, the wine is aged in a combination of barrels: acacia, French oak and American oak. The result is a wine that is marvelously complex, luscious, deep? and yes, wild!

On the nose, the Assyrtiko Wild Ferment is vivacious, making your nostrils tingle. Aromas of citrus, petrol (reminiscent of German Riesling) and herbs literally burst out of the glass, all cloaked by a minerality that evokes a sea breeze.

At first sip, you feel as if you?ve just bitten into a briny green olive ? mineral, salty and crisp, the wine instantly makes your mouth salivate. Then a myriad of flavors swell in your mouth: citrus peel, herbal notes reminiscent of fennel, bitter almonds, volcanic pumice, white pepper and even a hint of honey. The wine is fabulously complex, deep, luscious and round ? in one word, succulent!

In the process of pairing a wine with food, a bottle can end up being open for a couple of days. This one was no exception. Yet after tasting the same bottle for more than three days (storing it properly, of course), I was astounded to discover the Wild Ferment had lost none of its vibrancy and complexity ? truly a testament to the quality of this exquisite wine!

Seafood, olives, salty cheeses would all be excellent pairings, but I decided to serve the Wild Ferment with this mizuna and cucumber salad with red onions, feta, tarragon and Champagne vinaigrette. The salty minerality so prevalent in the wine was brilliant with the feta. The white pepper spice stood up to the spunky mizuna. The herbal elements sang along with the tarragon, while the vibrant acidity of the wine went hand-in-hand with the Champagne vinaigrette.

Drinking the Assyrtiko on its own is immensely pleasurable, but taking bites of the salad in between sips makes you pause and savor.

To me, this is the mark of a great wine. It entices you to taste food in a completely new way.

Gai?A Wines? Assyrtiko Wild Ferment is one of the most exciting white wines I?ve ever had. I hope Yiannis Paraskevopoulos continues his experiment for many years to come. Even though the wild yeast will make every vintage unpredictable, I know with certainty that the wines will be outstanding nonetheless.

You can purchase Gai?A Wines Assyrtiko Wild Ferment 2011 at Astor Wines. They ship to most states in the US.

Here?s another stunning wine produced by Gai?A: Gai?A 14-18h, Dry Ros?, Agiorgitiko paired with lentil and beet salad.

Both Sides Pleased With 'Right To Repair' Compromise ? CBS Boston

BOSTON (AP) ? Backers of automotive repair legislation approved in the waning hours of the legislative session say it could serve as a model for a national policy.

The bill was approved Tuesday by the Massachusetts House and Senate after a compromise was struck between automakers, dealers, and advocates for a requirement that car manufacturers make available to independent mechanics all repair codes and other diagnostic information.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030?s Laurie Kirby reports

The legislation included some key concessions to automakers that were not part of a ballot question that will go before Massachusetts voters in November. The industry would be given until 2018 to satisfy a mandate that all new cars sold in the state include an onboard diagnostic and repair information system that can easily be accessed with any typical laptop computer.

The ballot question called for a similar requirement in new cars as of 2015. Under the compromise legislation, car manufacturers will also have more flexibility to choose the interface device that would provide access to repair information; automakers had balked at being bound to a single interface protocol identified in the ballot measure, saying it could force the industry to use outmoded technology.

Gov. Deval Patrick has 10 days to act on the bill, and a spokeswoman for the governor said Wednesday he had not yet reviewed it. But the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition, which led the fight for the measure, said it was confident of Patrick?s signature.

?Massachusetts has (led) the way through the years on a range of issues; providing added convenience and value for car owners is now on the first-in-the-nation list,? the coalition said in a statement, adding that the prospective new law would be a ?big win for consumers.?

Regardless of whether Patrick signs the bill, the original ballot question will still appear in November because it was too late for the coalition ? which had gathered the necessary signatures to place it before voters ? to remove it from the ballot.

The campaign over the ballot issue had been expected to be costly and divisive. Now, both sides are pledging to join forces to urge voters to vote down the question so the compromise would stand.

Should the ballot question pass anyway, the Legislature could still move to reinstate the new language when it reconvenes in January.

Backers of the right to repair effort say it will address a common complaint among consumers that they are often forced to take their vehicles to more expensive dealers for repairs because the mechanics at their neighborhood garage often cannot access repair codes or perform tasks such as turning off a ?check engine? light on the dashboard.

Art Kinsman, a spokesman for the coalition, said despite the added time being given to automakers to install the universal system, consumers will benefit from the bill immediately because it also requires manufacturers to make available for purchase by independent repairers the same tools they provide to dealers for cars made after 2002.

?Repair and diagnostic information should never be a secret, Kinsman said.

Automakers contend that most diagnostic information is already available to repair facilities that wish to buy it.

GORE VIDAL, 1925-2012 ? Prolific, Elegant, Acerbic Writer By ...

The cause was complications of pneumonia, his nephew Burr Steers said by telephone.

Mr. Vidal was, at the end of his life, an Augustan figure who believed himself to be the last of a breed, and he was probably right. Few American writers have been more versatile or gotten more mileage from their talent. He published some 25 novels, two memoirs and several volumes of stylish, magisterial essays. He also wrote plays, television dramas and screenplays. For a while he was even a contract writer at MGM. And he could always be counted on for a spur-of-the-moment aphorism, putdown or sharply worded critique of American foreign policy.

Perhaps more than any other American writer except Norman Mailer or Truman Capote, Mr. Vidal took great pleasure in being a public figure. He twice ran for office ? in 1960, when he was the Democratic Congressional candidate for the 29th District in upstate New York, and in 1982, when he campaigned in California for a seat in the Senate ? and though he lost both times, he often conducted himself as a sort of unelected shadow president. He once said, ?There is not one human problem that could not be solved if people would simply do as I advise.?

Mr. Vidal was an occasional actor, appearing, for example, in animated form on ?The Simpsons? and ?Family Guy,? in the movie version of his own play ?The Best Man,? and in the Tim Robbins movie ?Bob Roberts,? in which he played an aging, epicene version of himself. He was a more than occasional guest on TV talk shows, where his poise, wit, looks and charm made him such a regular that Johnny Carson offered him a spot as a guest host of ?The Tonight Show.?

Television was a natural medium for Mr. Vidal, who in person was often as cool and detached as he was in his prose. ?Gore is a man without an unconscious,? his friend the Italian writer Italo Calvino once said. Mr. Vidal said of himself: ?I?m exactly as I appear. There is no warm, lovable person inside. Beneath my cold exterior, once you break the ice, you find cold water.?

Mr. Vidal loved conspiracy theories of all sorts, especially the ones he imagined himself at the center of, and he was a famous feuder; he engaged in celebrated on-screen wrangles with Mailer, Capote and William F. Buckley Jr. Mr. Vidal did not lightly suffer fools ? a category that for him comprised a vast swath of humanity, elected officials especially ? and he was not a sentimentalist or a romantic. ?Love is not my bag,? he said.

By the time he was 25, he had already had more than 1,000 sexual encounters with both men and women, he boasted in his memoir ?Palimpsest.? Mr. Vidal tended toward what he called ?same-sex sex,? but frequently declared that human beings were inherently bisexual, and that labels like gay (a term he particularly disliked) or straight were arbitrary and unhelpful. For 53 years, he had a live-in companion, Howard Austen, a former advertising executive, but the secret of their relationship, he often said, was that they did not sleep together.

Mr. Vidal sometimes claimed to be a populist ? in theory, anyway ? but he was not convincing as one. Both by temperament and by birth he was an aristocrat.

Eugene Luther Gore Vidal Jr. was born on Oct. 3, 1925, at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where his father, Eugene, had been an All-American football player and a track star and had returned as a flying instructor and assistant football coach. An aviation pioneer, Eugene Vidal Sr. went on to found three airlines, including one that became T.W.A. He was director of the Bureau of Air Commerce under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr. Vidal?s mother, Nina, was an actress and socialite and the daughter of Thomas Pryor Gore, the Democratic senator from Oklahoma.

Mr. Vidal, who once said he had grown up in ?the House of Atreus,? detested his mother, whom he frequently described as a bullying, self-pitying alcoholic. She and Mr. Vidal?s father divorced in 1935, and she married Hugh D. Auchincloss, the stepfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis ? a connection that Mr. Vidal never tired of bringing up. After her remarriage, Mr. Vidal lived with his mother at Merrywood, the Auchincloss family estate in Virginia, but his fondest memories were of the years the family spent at his maternal grandfather?s sprawling home in the Rock Creek Park neighborhood of Washington. He loved to read to his grandfather, who was blind, and sometimes accompanied him onto the Senate floor. Mr. Vidal?s lifelong interest in politics began to stir back then, and from his grandfather, an America Firster, he probably also inherited his unwavering isolationist beliefs.

Mr. Vidal attended St. Albans School in Washington, where he lopped off his Christian names and became simply Gore Vidal, which he considered more literary-sounding. Though he shunned sports himself, he formed an intense romantic and sexual friendship ? the most important of his life, he later said ? with Jimmie Trimble, one of the school?s best athletes. Trimble was his ?ideal brother,? his ?other half,? Mr. Vidal said, the only person with whom he ever felt wholeness. Jimmie?s premature death at Iwo Jima in?World War II?at once sealed off their relationship in a glow of A. E. Housman-like early perfection, and seemingly made it impossible for Mr. Vidal ever to feel the same way about anyone else.

After leaving St. Albans in 1939, Mr. Vidal spent a year at the Los Alamos Ranch School in New Mexico before enrolling at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He published stories and poems in the Exeter literary magazine, but he was an indifferent student who excelled mostly at debating. A classmate, the writer John Knowles, later used him as the model for Brinker Hadley, the know-it-all conspiracy theorist in ?A Separate Peace,? his Exeter-based novel.

Mr. Vidal graduated from Exeter at 17 ? only by cheating, he later admitted, on virtually every math exam ? and enlisted in the Army, where he became first mate on a freight supply ship in the Aleutian Islands. He began work on ?Williwaw,? a novel set on a troopship and published in 1946 while Mr. Vidal was an associate editor at the publishing company E. P. Dutton, a job he soon gave up. Written in a pared-down, Hemingway-like style, ?Williwaw? (the title is a meteorological term for a sudden wind out of the mountains) won some admiring reviews but gave little clue to the kind of writer Mr. Vidal would become. Neither did his second book, ?In a Yellow Wood? (1947), about a brokerage clerk and his wartime Italian mistress, which Mr. Vidal later said was so bad, he couldn?t bear to reread it. He nevertheless became a glamorous young literary figure, pursued by Ana?s Nin and courted by Christopher Isherwood and Tennessee Williams.

In 1948 Mr. Vidal published ?The City and the Pillar,? which was dedicated to J. T. (Jimmie Trimble). It is what we would now call a coming-out story, about a handsome, athletic young Virginia man who gradually discovers that he is homosexual. By today?s standards it is tame and discreet, but at the time it caused a scandal and was denounced as corrupt and pornographic. Mr. Vidal later claimed that the literary and critical establishment, The New York Times especially, had blacklisted him because of the book, and he may have been right. He had such trouble getting subsequent novels reviewed that he turned to writing mysteries under the pseudonym Edgar Box and then, for a time, gave up novel-writing altogether. To make a living he concentrated on writing for television, then for the stage and the movies.

Work was plentiful. He wrote for most of the shows that presented hourlong original dramas in the 1950s, including ?Studio One,? ?Philco Television Playhouse? and ?Goodyear Playhouse.? He became so adept, he could knock off an adaptation in a weekend and an original play in a week or two. He turned ?Visit to a Small Planet,? his 1955 television drama about an alien who comes to earth to study the art of war, into a successful Broadway play. His most successful play was ?The Best Man,? about two contenders for the presidential nomination. It ran for 520 performances on Broadway before it, too, became a successful film, in 1964, with a cast headed by Henry Fonda and a screenplay by Mr. Vidal. It was revived on Broadway in 2000 and is now being revived there again as ?Gore Vidal?s The Best Man.? Mr. Vidal?s reputation as a script doctor was such that in 1956 MGM hired him as a contract writer; among other projects he helped rewrite the screenplay of ?Ben-Hur,? though he was denied an official credit. He also wrote the screenplay for the movie adaptation of his friend Tennessee Williams?s play ?Suddenly, Last Summer.?

?I always thought about Gore that he was not really a novelist,? Mr. Epstein wrote, ?that he had too much ego to be a writer of fiction because he couldn?t subordinate himself to other people the way you have to as a novelist.?

Success did not mellow Mr. Vidal. In 1968, while covering the Democratic National Convention on television, he called William F. Buckley a ?crypto-Nazi.? Buckley responded by calling Mr. Vidal a ?queer,? and the two were in court for years. In a 1971 essay he compared Norman Mailer to Charles Manson, and a few months later Mailer head-butted him in the green room while the two were waiting to appear on the Dick Cavett show. They then took their quarrel on the air in a memorable exchange that ended with Mr. Cavett?s telling Mailer to take a piece of paper on the table in front of them and ?fold it five ways and put it where the moon don?t shine.? In 1975 Mr. Vidal sued Truman Capote for libel after Capote wrote that Mr. Vidal had been thrown out of the Kennedy White House. Mr. Vidal won a grudging apology.

Some of his political positions were similarly quarrelsome and provocative. Mr. Vidal was an outspoken critic of Israel?s treatment of the?Palestinians, and once called Norman Podhoretz, the editor of Commentary, and his wife, the journalist Midge Decter, ?Israeli Fifth Columnists.? In the 1990s he wrote sympathetically about Timothy McVeigh, who was executed for the Oklahoma City bombing. And after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he wrote an essay for Vanity Fair arguing that America had brought the attacks upon itself by maintaining imperialist foreign policies. In another essay, for The Independent, he compared the attacks to the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, arguing that both Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush knew of them in advance and exploited them to advance their agendas.

As for literature, it was more or less over, he declared more than once, and he had reached a point where he no longer much cared. He became a sort of connoisseur of decline, in fact. America is ?rotting away at a funereal pace,? he told The Times of London in 2009. ?We?ll have a military dictatorship pretty soon, on the basis that nobody else can hold everything together.?

In 2003 Mr. Vidal and his companion, Mr. Austen, who was ill, left their cliffside Italian villa La Rondinaia (the Swallow?s Nest) on the Gulf of Salerno and moved to the Hollywood Hills to be closer to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Mr. Austen died that year, and in ?Point to Point Navigation,? his second volume of memoirs, Mr. Vidal recalled that Mr. Austen asked from his deathbed, ?Didn?t it go by awfully fast??

?Of course it had,? Mr. Vidal wrote. ?We had been too happy and the gods cannot bear the happiness of mortals.? Mr. Austen was buried in Washington in a plot Mr. Vidal had purchased in Rock Creek Cemetery. The gravestone was already inscribed with their names side by side.

After Mr. Austen?s death, Mr. Vidal lived alone in declining health himself. He was increasingly troubled by a knee injury he suffered in the war, and used a wheelchair to get around. In November 2009 he made a rare public appearance to attend the?National Book Awards?in New York, where he was given a lifetime achievement award. He evidently had not prepared any remarks, and instead delivered a long, meandering impromptu speech that was sometimes funny and sometimes a little hard to follow. At one point he even seemed to speak fondly of Buckley, his old nemesis. It sounded like a summing up.

?Such fun, such fun,? he said.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: August 1, 2012

An earlier version misstated the term Mr. Vidal called William F. Buckley Jr. in a television appearance during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It was crypto-Nazi, not crypto-fascist. It also described incorrectly Mr. Vidal?s connection with former Vice President Al Gore. Although Mr. Vidal frequently referred jokingly to Mr. Gore as his cousin, they were not related. And Mr. Vidal?s relationship with his longtime live-in companion, Howard Austen, was also described incorrectly.? According to Mr. Vidal?s memoir ?Palimpsest,? they had sex the night they met, but did not sleep together after they began living together. It was not true that they never had sex.

The price of preserving fossils for the future

IT'S a decision few would envy: what to do with a patch of land contested by palaeontologists, gas companies and indigenous peoples? All three groups claim that James Price Point in Western Australia is invaluable: for its fossil record, its proximity to offshore gas and its place in their beliefs, respectively (see "Lost world of dinosaurs threatened by gas industry").

The gas companies are winning the argument so far: it would be costly to relocate, and they have pledged to avoid known fossils. But the scientifically minded may sympathise more naturally with the dinosaur-hunters. As this week's Instant Expert explains, our ability to decipher fossils is still evolving. A fossil lost today is thus knowledge lost tomorrow.

Fossils endure for millions of years, but can be erased in a geological instant - along with their unique record of the past. What price can you put on that?

KarenCallsIt: Miss Teen USA 2012 Starts Foundation For Bullied Kids

Behind the glamour of the crowns, beaded gowns and adoring fans,?Logan West, the newly crowned Miss Teen USA 2012 recently opened up about her personal struggles with bullying while growing up.? And we?re loving everything about her.

She?s the first Miss TEEN?USA from Connecticut, and the fab chick is already making some waves!

?I?m starting to believe now that I would rather have a bruise than have someone tear a piece out of me with their words,?Logan West told the?Hartford Curant.? She was just?crowned 2012 Miss Teen USA on Saturday.

Though she has been praised publicly for her beauty and poise (in addition to being very well spoken we might add), Logan recently came forward with the pain she experienced being tormented by classmates growing up.? And she?s made it one of her causes as the new Miss Teen USA.

Logan, the offspring of a black mother and a white father (both of whom were at the pageant in the Bahamas on Saturday to see her get crowned), says she was often teased for the way walked and talked. And for ?acting white.?? But the college-bound 18-year-old chose to turn the other cheek back in the 7th grade?..and she says it was a big mistake.

MSNBC?said?about the physical bullying:

As a middle-schooler and high school freshman, West said she was bullied for ?not acting her skin color.? She was punched, kicked and stabbed with umbrellas by a group of bullies until it escalated into a fight where she was suspended from school. During her suspension, she came up with her own anti-bullying program that she began promoting around the state after winning the Connecticut Outstanding Teen Pageant in 2010.

?I waited so long to say something that it was almost my fault,??she said.

The torment went from trash-talking to one person throwing a ?chewed? quesadilla at her.? And Logan recalled throwing a wad of rice at her.

?Instantly, I knew it was wrong.? And my bully got up and punched me right in the face in front of everybody.? Both of them got suspended for two days.? ?I loved school with all my heart. I wanted to be up every morning. I was ready to go. I did my homework. But when I was being bullied, I found every excuse not to go to school.?

As a result, Ms. West has created a program called ?Bully Proof: Empowering Children Today to Prevent Bullying Tomorrow.?

She says the most important thing a child who is being bullied at school can do is to tell an adult.? She adds that children need to know the difference between bullying and teasing.

As for what she?d say if she could speak to her bully today:

?I?d say thank you. Because if it weren?t for her I would not have the confidence or the strength that I have right now. I gained this whole new sense of strength that I can teach youths how to protect themselves from this horrible epidemic called bullying.?

The 5?7 beauty said in a statement to?MSNBC:

?Being Miss Teen USA will give me the opportunity to educate students about bullying on a national level and share my story.? It wasn?t always easy, but my parents made sure that I learned how to cope with it and ensure that I didn?t stay introverted.?

?I lost who Logan was when I was being bullied, but I found that participating in pageants helped me find ?her? again as well as gain the confidence to be a role model and voice for others.? During my reign, I hope to share with teens the importance of being true to yourself.??

Great cause Logan!

Timeshare Industry International Research Finds Product Demand ...

ARDA logARDA International Foundation Studies Focus on Global Shared Vacation Ownership Market; Data Among International Timeshare Owners, Developers, & Operators

WASHINGTON, DC, (July 31, 2012) ? The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) released the findings of research that surveyed international shared vacation ownership developers and operators, as well as owners globally. Commissioned by the ARDA International Foundation (AIF), the World Wide Shared Vacation Ownership Report: 2012 Edition was conducted by Oxford Economics and The Research Intelligence Group. The research provided a detailed understanding of the vacation ownership industry?s size, composition, and performance in regions around the world. The study not only found that the industry has a significant footprint, but also that it is diverse in its makeup, resilient, and its owners are optimistic about the industry?s future.? With 5,300 resorts in 108 countries, global shared vacation ownership supported more than 1.1 million jobs and generated over $45 billion in direct economic output in 2012.

The study also surveyed owners in 24 different countries and found that nearly two percent of households (20 million owner households) own at least one timeshare product, and that 81 percent of owners vacationed in the past year.? In the United States, ownership represents seven percent of all households, with 83 percent of owners having vacationed in the last twelve months.

?This study further cements the correlation between ownership and vacationing,? said ARDA president and CEO Howard Nusbaum.? ?Across the globe, owners are nearly twice as likely as non-owners to have vacationed in the past 12 months.?? This sentiment is also reflected in the global occupancy rate of 76 percent compared with the worldwide hotel industry, which now has occupancy rates substantially lower than shared vacation ownership properties.

North America offers the most properties with 2,500 resorts or 46 percent of the total market, followed by Europe with 25 percent, Central and South America with 10 percent, Asia with 6 percent, the Caribbean with 5 percent, Africa with 4 percent, and Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, the island of New Guinea, and neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean) with 2 percent.

The research also found that 80 percent of the properties outside the U.S. offer traditional interval weeks, 28 percent offer biennial products, 27 percent offer points-based products, 27 percent offer trial memberships, 16 percent offer fractional or Private Residence Club ownership products, and 9 percent offer triennial products.

Other findings include data about new ownership and market growth.? Future generations of timeshare owners will likely expand to numerous countries, with particular emphasis on Brazil, Russia, India, and China.? While these countries currently have a relatively small incidence of timeshare ownership (1.6, 1.9, 0.3, and 0.3 percent respectively), there are encouraging indicators such as a heavy representation of the global population, a growing middle class, a positive attitude toward timeshare among non-owners, and consideration of future timeshare ownership among non-owners that point toward timeshare growth within these countries.

For further information about the study, visit http://www.arda.org/aif-foundation/research/worldwidestudy.aspx.

The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is the Washington D.C.-based professional association representing the vacation ownership and resort development industries.? Established in 1969, ARDA today has over 1,000 members ranging from privately held firms to publicly traded companies and international corporations with expertise in shared ownership interests in leisure real estate.? The membership also includes timeshare owner associations (HOAs), resort management companies, and owners through the ARDA Resort Owners Coalition (ARDA-ROC). For more information, visit www.arda.org or ARDA?s consumer website at www.VacationBetter.org.
