Karl Rove's 'Liberal Group' Complaint And The Crossroads GPS Scheme

The Daily Beast:

Karl Rove, the co-founder of Crossroads GPS, has taken of late to asking why his 501(c)(4) social welfare group has been scrutinized, while ?liberal groups have operated for decades in the same way GPS does without Democrats complaining.? He singled out the League of Conservation Voters, NARAL Pro-Choice America, unions and the NAACP.

In his article, "Pathoetiology of multiple sclerosis: are we barking up the wrong tree?", Peter K. Stys of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, argues that while the majority of the medical research community currently approaches MS as an autoimmune disease (much like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis), for which the trigger is the immune system attacking a particular part of the nervous system, the features of the disease are equally well explained by approaching MS as a neurodegenerative disease (such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's), which is followed by an immune reaction to damage.

This may sound like a fine distinction, but it would totally change the approach taken in treating the disease, as one would try to stop the degeneration of the nervous system rather than damp down the immune system. Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the breaking down of the nervous system, and although immune cell infiltration and loss of the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibres is the hallmark of MS, more recent studies indicate that neuronal structures are also damaged.

Dr. Stys argues that as current approaches have failed to produce effective treatments, the medical research community should look afresh at alternative explanations for the disease, in order to better understand how to treat MS.

ASUS announces the MeMo Pad FHD 10: dual-core Intel Atom processor and a 1,920 x 1,200 display (hands-on)

ASUS has just unveiled a new tablet, and it marks the return of the MeMo Pad series. This one is a 10-inch, 9.5mm-thick slab, housing both a dual-core, 1.6GHz Intel processor and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean -- another Clover Trail+ powered tablet from the Taiwanese company. Perhaps just as notable is the inclusion of a 1,920 x 1,200 backlit 10-inch screen -- one that's capable of 1080p video playback and one that performed just as admirably as recent ASUS tablets. We're promised 10 hours of use from the 25Wh battery, with all the requisite Bluetooth (3.0), WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and GPS connectivity. There are also dual speakers but we're waiting to confirm if this means stereo sound. It'll arrive in two configurations: 16GB and 32GB, in either dark blue and white. 2 NATO service members killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO says that two of its service members and one civilian working with the international coalition in Afghanistan have been killed in two separate attacks in the country's east.

The coalition says insurgents killed one of the service members and the civilian on Saturday, while a roadside bomb killed the other service member.

It gave no details of the attack, nor the nationalities of the dead.

The deaths bring to 65 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this year. Deaths of NATO personnel have gone down in recent months as international forces pull back to allow Afghan soldiers and police to take the lead in ensuring security.

Fish rookie Fernandez stymies Mets

MIAMI (AP) - The New York Mets are getting to know Miami's Jose Fernandez very well.

Fernandez pitched seven scoreless innings and had two hits with an RBI to help the Marlins past the New York Mets 8-1 on Saturday.

Fernandez (3-3) allowed just three hits and struck out eight to give the Marlins their fourth winning streak of the season. Miami has won two straight games three times and three in a row once.

It was the third time Fernandez faced the Mets, and the first time he earned a decision. He made his big-league debut in New York on April 7.

"He's going to be in this league a long time. We're going to see him a lot of times because you play them 19 times," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Fernandez.

"I'm going to tell you something, if he throws like he did today, I don't care if you see him 30 times, he's going to get you out."

Collin McHugh (0-1) gave up four runs and six hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out one in his first start of the season.

McHugh walked two batters in the first when New York fell behind 1-0.

"Fastball command is the most important thing and it wasn't there where I wanted it to be today," McHugh said.

Fernandez retired his final 11 Mets hitters and struck out the side in the seventh. He also had an RBI single in in the second, and doubled and scored in the seventh.

"He pitched at 96 most of the game and that's outstanding," Collins said. "He threw his breaking ball for strikes. He's got great stuff. We saw it the first start. He's going to be a real, real good pitcher."

Fernandez was coming off his shortest outing of the season. He surrendered seven runs -- four earned -- in 3 1-3 innings at Tampa Bay on May 27.

"He was making his pitches, getting ahead, good out pitches, elevating, and throwing a good slider," Mets catcher John Buck said.

The Mets were scheduled to have their ace, Matt Harvey, on the mound for Sunday's series finale against Miami's Kevin Slowey.

"Matt Harvey, what can you say? He's been in every game he's pitched and if we scored him some runs he'd be 9-0," Collins said.

Omar Quintanilla had two of the Mets' hits. Pinch hitter Justin Turner delivered a run-scoring double off Dan Jennings in the eighth.

Chris Coghlan had three hits, including two run-scoring singles. Derek Dietrich had a two-run single in a four-run seventh that made it 8-0.

Miami went ahead 2-0 in the second when Fernandez singled to score Jeff Mathis from first base. Mathis walked with two outs, and scored when Fernandez lined a single into deep left-center.

The Marlins scored twice in the fourth to go ahead 4-0. Coghlan and Greg Dobbs opened with singles. Adeiny Hechavarria delivered a sacrifice fly and Mathis tripled in Dobbs.

NOTES: It was Fernandez's third start against the Mets and his first with a decision. ... Marcell Ozuna's 16-game hitting streak ended. He went 0-for-3 with a walk. ... New York RHP Matt Harvey (5-0, 1.85) opposes RHP Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.59) in Sunday's series finale. ... Mets pinch-hitter Marlon Byrd singled in the eighth for his 1,100 career hit.
