Next-gen game consoles enter the battle as annual convention kicks off

What part of the PlayStation 4 is this? Gamers will finally find out at the E3 convention in Los Angeles this week.

As the game industry and its many eager followers descend on Los Angeles for a week chock-full of product announcements, gameplay previews, and everything in-between, the stakes are particularly high. After all, this is one of the rare years where a new generation of consoles is born.

Sony and Microsoft are only in the process of debuting their new technology. They both still have a lot to prove, and this is the one opportunity for each to make the case for why its console should reign supreme.

Hey Microsoft: Bring on the games already!
Microsoft threw many of its gaming fans off in May when it unveiled the Xbox One in an event that had very little to do with video games. However, the timing may have been a smart move, as it allowed the company to focus on the devices many impressive-sounding multimedia and entertainment features, while reserving its stage time at E3 to address the video game part of the equation.

"Call of Duty: Ghosts" is one of the most highly anticipated games to be shown at E3 this year. So far, the main thing about the game Activision has teased that has gamers excited is the addition of a dog to the player's squad.

Activision

"Call of Duty: Ghosts" is one of the most highly anticipated games to be shown at E3 this year. So far, the main thing about the game Activision has teased that has gamers excited is the addition of a dog to the player's squad.

The company has talked through its features ? and subsequently released a thorough clarification of many of the console's most controversial features, such as its policies on used or borrowed games and its online-connection requirements.

Now it must let the actual games come to the fore.

Microsoft executives have continuously emphasized the fact that the new console already has more exclusive titles being developed in-house than ever before. Does this mean that we'll be seeing a new "Halo" come Monday? Probably.

But given Microsoft's success over the last console generation and the flack it no doubt noticed erupting over its indie game development policy, the tech giant will want to show that it has even more tricks up its sleeve than another Master Chief adventure.

Sony's got games ? but what about everything else?
Sony "has already done a great job with games," said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

In fact, the PlayStation 4 maker spent so much time trotting out game developers during its two-hour-plus event ? to talk about everything from the blockbuster shooting franchise "Killzone" to acclaimed indie developer Jonathan Blow's next game, "The Witness" ? it took a while for people to realize Sony didn't even show the machine itself.

Yes, gamers still have little to no idea what the PlayStation 4 looks like, let alone what kinds of additional features, both gaming and home entertainment, that the system will support. And given the overwhelming social media campaign that came about when a journalist speculated on Sony's possible digital rights management scheme, PlayStation fans are clearly hungry for more information about how the new console will be used.

Nintendo has been getting fans excited again for the return of many classic titles such as "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," but most of the best-looking games are only slated for the 3DS mobile console. Can it do the same for the Wii U?

Nintendo

Nintendo has been getting fans excited again for the return of many classic titles such as "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," but most of the best-looking games are only slated for the 3DS mobile console. Can it do the same for the Wii U?

Nintendo's software problem
Ironically enough, the one major console developer that beat the next-gen competition to market may have the most to lose at this year's convention. Nintendo released the Wii U in late 2012, about a year before Sony and Microsoft will likely ship their respective machines. But that grace period hasn't done the hallowed Japanese company any favors.

"Nintendo's problem today is that its hardcore fanbase has not supported it through the launch of the Wii U," Pachter said. "It cannot be a mass-market company without mass-market appeal, and they can't appeal to the masses if they don't get the support of the hardcore gamers."

Thing is, if Nintendo's iconic brands ? the Marios, Zeldas, and Pok?mons of the world ? haven't managed to support the Wii U so far, this "mass-market appeal" can only come from third-party software, like "Call of Duty" or "Assassin's Creed." But can we expect Wii U versions of these to make appearances at E3 and prove to be Nintendo's saving grace?

Probably not, says Pachter. The company has already announced that, unlike its two closest competitors, it will not host a single official press conference at this year's E3 ? choosing instead to focus on smaller events, previews, and the Nintendo Direct live-streaming announcements it's begun to use for software unveilings.

"The fact that they decided not to have a press event shows they don't have their act together," Pachter said. "I don't think they're going to have enough content to really thrive this holiday season."

Syria troops battle rebels outside strategic town

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian troops backed by fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group are clashing with rebels near a strategic town captured by government forces earlier this week.

Government troops were chasing rebels who fled the strategic town of Qusair, near the border with Lebanon, and pressing to drive the rebels out of Syria's central heartland.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported intense fighting Saturday on the edges of al-Buweida village north of Qusair. The government recaptured Qusair Wednesday and took two nearby two villages since.

Abu Bilal al-Homsi, an activist in the central Syrian city of Homs who has links with several rebel groups, said through Skype that rebels sustained heavy losses late Friday as they attempted to flee the village with their wounded and civilians.

In his article, "Pathoetiology of multiple sclerosis: are we barking up the wrong tree?", Peter K. Stys of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, argues that while the majority of the medical research community currently approaches MS as an autoimmune disease (much like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis), for which the trigger is the immune system attacking a particular part of the nervous system, the features of the disease are equally well explained by approaching MS as a neurodegenerative disease (such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's), which is followed by an immune reaction to damage.

This may sound like a fine distinction, but it would totally change the approach taken in treating the disease, as one would try to stop the degeneration of the nervous system rather than damp down the immune system. Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the breaking down of the nervous system, and although immune cell infiltration and loss of the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibres is the hallmark of MS, more recent studies indicate that neuronal structures are also damaged.

Dr. Stys argues that as current approaches have failed to produce effective treatments, the medical research community should look afresh at alternative explanations for the disease, in order to better understand how to treat MS.

ASUS announces the MeMo Pad FHD 10: dual-core Intel Atom processor and a 1,920 x 1,200 display (hands-on)

ASUS has just unveiled a new tablet, and it marks the return of the MeMo Pad series. This one is a 10-inch, 9.5mm-thick slab, housing both a dual-core, 1.6GHz Intel processor and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean -- another Clover Trail+ powered tablet from the Taiwanese company. Perhaps just as notable is the inclusion of a 1,920 x 1,200 backlit 10-inch screen -- one that's capable of 1080p video playback and one that performed just as admirably as recent ASUS tablets. We're promised 10 hours of use from the 25Wh battery, with all the requisite Bluetooth (3.0), WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and GPS connectivity. There are also dual speakers but we're waiting to confirm if this means stereo sound. It'll arrive in two configurations: 16GB and 32GB, in either dark blue and white. The whole package weighs in at just 580g and we just got to handle it for ourselves -- check out our gallery right after the break. We'll be updating the post with pricing and availability when we hear more and a hands-on video is coming soon too!

2 NATO service members killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO says that two of its service members and one civilian working with the international coalition in Afghanistan have been killed in two separate attacks in the country's east.

The coalition says insurgents killed one of the service members and the civilian on Saturday, while a roadside bomb killed the other service member.

It gave no details of the attack, nor the nationalities of the dead.

The deaths bring to 65 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this year. Deaths of NATO personnel have gone down in recent months as international forces pull back to allow Afghan soldiers and police to take the lead in ensuring security.

Fish rookie Fernandez stymies Mets

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:23 p.m. ET June 1, 2013

MIAMI (AP) - The New York Mets are getting to know Miami's Jose Fernandez very well.

Fernandez pitched seven scoreless innings and had two hits with an RBI to help the Marlins past the New York Mets 8-1 on Saturday.

Fernandez (3-3) allowed just three hits and struck out eight to give the Marlins their fourth winning streak of the season. Miami has won two straight games three times and three in a row once.

It was the third time Fernandez faced the Mets, and the first time he earned a decision. He made his big-league debut in New York on April 7.

"He's going to be in this league a long time. We're going to see him a lot of times because you play them 19 times," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Fernandez.

"I'm going to tell you something, if he throws like he did today, I don't care if you see him 30 times, he's going to get you out."

Collin McHugh (0-1) gave up four runs and six hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out one in his first start of the season.

McHugh walked two batters in the first when New York fell behind 1-0.

"Fastball command is the most important thing and it wasn't there where I wanted it to be today," McHugh said.

Fernandez retired his final 11 Mets hitters and struck out the side in the seventh. He also had an RBI single in in the second, and doubled and scored in the seventh.

"He pitched at 96 most of the game and that's outstanding," Collins said. "He threw his breaking ball for strikes. He's got great stuff. We saw it the first start. He's going to be a real, real good pitcher."

Fernandez was coming off his shortest outing of the season. He surrendered seven runs -- four earned -- in 3 1-3 innings at Tampa Bay on May 27.

"He was making his pitches, getting ahead, good out pitches, elevating, and throwing a good slider," Mets catcher John Buck said.

The Mets were scheduled to have their ace, Matt Harvey, on the mound for Sunday's series finale against Miami's Kevin Slowey.

"Matt Harvey, what can you say? He's been in every game he's pitched and if we scored him some runs he'd be 9-0," Collins said.

Omar Quintanilla had two of the Mets' hits. Pinch hitter Justin Turner delivered a run-scoring double off Dan Jennings in the eighth.

Chris Coghlan had three hits, including two run-scoring singles. Derek Dietrich had a two-run single in a four-run seventh that made it 8-0.

Miami went ahead 2-0 in the second when Fernandez singled to score Jeff Mathis from first base. Mathis walked with two outs, and scored when Fernandez lined a single into deep left-center.

The Marlins scored twice in the fourth to go ahead 4-0. Coghlan and Greg Dobbs opened with singles. Adeiny Hechavarria delivered a sacrifice fly and Mathis tripled in Dobbs.

NOTES: It was Fernandez's third start against the Mets and his first with a decision. ... Marcell Ozuna's 16-game hitting streak ended. He went 0-for-3 with a walk. ... New York RHP Matt Harvey (5-0, 1.85) opposes RHP Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.59) in Sunday's series finale. ... Mets pinch-hitter Marlon Byrd singled in the eighth for his 1,100 career hit.

New Mexico wildfires cause evacuations

PECOS, N.M. (AP) ? Fast-moving wildfires in New Mexico prompted evacuations of homes and campgrounds, threatened cabins, and closed a state highway Friday.

Officials asked residents in 140 homes ? mostly used for the summer ? to leave as crews battled the 3.9-square-mile (2,500-acre) blaze near the communities of Pecos and Tres Lagunas, about 25 miles east of Santa Fe.

They also evacuated campgrounds and closed trailheads around Pecos, Las Vegas and Santa Fe as they worked on containment lines in hopes of preventing the fire from moving toward the capital city's watershed and the Tres Lagunas community.

Officials said the fire in New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest more than doubled in size by Friday evening and was still totally uncontained. That prompted New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez to declare a state of emergency in San Miguel County to free up state funds to fight the fire.

New Mexico State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware said the evacuations came after the fire jumped state Route 63.

"Fire activity is picking up this morning, and because of expected high winds, low humidity and increasing temperatures, the spread potential is high," Ware said.

Officials said a downed power line ignited the blaze Thursday. It's the first major wildfire this year in New Mexico, which is in its driest two-year period in nearly 120 years of record keeping.

"It has been a slow start to the season, until this point," said State Forester Tony Delfin. "Now we expect the conditions to go on until the monsoons come or the weather changes the pattern."

Martinez said about 40 people, mostly hikers and campers, have been evacuated from the area.

Friday night, officials said a second, smaller wildfire about 50 miles northwest of Albuquerque was also causing evacuations.

State forestry said in a statement that the Thompson Ridge fire near Jemez Springs started Friday afternoon and had grown to an estimated 700 acres by evening.

The service said about 50 homes in the area had been evacuated and one home was damaged by the fire.

The blaze was still burning uncontrolled Friday night but officials said its growth had slowed, reducing any immediate threats to structures.

Meanwhile, firefighters gained ground on a wildfire in the mountains north of Los Angeles. Crews took advantage of cool morning weather to make progress Friday, but scattered flames continued to climb hillsides.

The 2.2-square-mile wildfire was 15 percent contained, and as many as 500 firefighters hoped to make further progress before the day turned hot and dry, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy said.

A flare-up prompted authorities to briefly evacuate about 25 homes along a canyon road in the Angeles National Forest in the morning, but residents were later allowed to return.

"Right now the fire's not doing a whole lot. It's just making small runs here and there," Judy said. "There's no large fire front."

He said the blaze was burning near power lines, although utilities reported no damage.

In fighting the blaze in New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest, a helicopter helped with efforts to secure the western perimeter of the fire Friday morning, but it was grounded by late morning due to high winds.

Nearly 300 firefighters were working on the blaze, which was being fueled by winds from the north and northwest.

Duane Archuleta, forest fire management officer for the Santa Fe and Carson national forests, said if winds pushed the blaze toward an area that burned in the 2000 Viveash fire, it might help efforts to contain it.

"The fire could run and hit that ridge and kind of die out on that ridge," he said.

No structures had burned and no injuries were reported, but the fire was burning near Tres Lagunas, an upscale community of cabins and vacation homes.

"They're really working that hard and holding onto that," Archuleta said.

Among those evacuated were a group of seventh-graders staying at the Panchuela Campground.

Some homeowners in the Pecos Canyon area couldn't reach their houses Thursday because emergency crews had closed state Highway 63.

Tracy Bennett, manager of Hidden Valley Ranch guest ranch north of Pecos, said he evacuated his four guests as soon he saw smoke Thursday.

"The power's out and with all this going on, it's just unnerving," he said Friday as he watched the blaze from the roadblock.

Exercising Old-School - Health, Fitness, and Sports - Wrong Planet

About two weeks ago, I went for an annual physical. I had ballooned in the last year. For six years, I had held steady at just under 300lb, but when I went in I weighed in at 360lb. Needless to say, this was a bit of a shock. Yet, in the last two weeks, I dropped 20lb. I'm rather proud of myself. It's the first time I've actively lost weight in over half a decade.

I approached this in a two-pronged attack. The first was through food. Rather than stuffing my face with whatever could be microwaved quickly, I cooked. And I cooked so that I would have few leftovers. I've learned I'm pretty good at cooking, and have noticed that if eaten slowly, and without the temptation of a second serving, I can be just as satisfied with a small bowl of goulash as I might with a big one or three.

The second was through exercise, and that's the point of this thread. Now, my sister, she's a gym rat, and her boyfriend is a powerlifter, and both of them have been trying to drag me to the gym. The problem is, I don't like gyms. If I exercise, I prefer it to be out of doors. There's something about gyms that has always put me off, I just don't know what it is.

So what I did instead, keeping with my special interest du jour, the 19th Century British Empire, was to devour everything I could find on the exercises of that time. In case you didn't know, physical fitness was almost a religion in those days (It wouldn't do to send flabby little nerds off to subjugate deepest Africa). Rudyard Kipling, for example, one of my great heroes, was a four and a half minute mile, supposedly. So, says I, what can I learn here?

When my sister goes to the gym, she'll spend two hours of exercise there, and the rest of the day, she sits. This didn't seem pretty productive to me, and a lot of the sources that I've studied actually proposed instead to do a little bit a lot; A set of 60 jumping jacks or 25 squats every hour, for example. It seemed stamina training and walking had a greater emphasis than anything else, but strength training was definitely supported. A young man was recommended to do curls or pushups getting out of bed, and to run a mile every evening before bed. In between, there were exercises scattered throughout the day.

Now, this philosophy of physical fitness all the time seems far more positive to me than "a half hour of continuous exercise three times a week" as my doctor suggested. This is the kind of training that puts us at peak physical fitness, and it was spread throughout the western world, not just in Britain. What happened? Why have the expectations placed on a man (or woman) been reduced so drastically, and despite the obesity epidemic, nobody seems to be proposing a return to such a regimen?

Ah, well, it works for me.

Review: Crepe Affaire | Leeds-List

The arrival of Trinity Leeds saw swarms of new shops to the city centre, but it also saw a plethora of new eateries arriving in the heart of the shopping district.

We?ve talked a lot about restaurants recently ? and we mean a lot, have you seen our hot-off-the-press Leeds Food & Drink Guide? ? but we wanted to focus a little on the light bites that the city has to offer too.

This is where Crepe Affaire comes in. Residing near H&M on the second floor of Trinity, the venue isn?t particularly large, but it?s decorated with bright white walls and floor-length windows that look out over Albion Street.

You can smell the coffee before you even step into the restaurant ? and they?re not too shabby either ? but once you see the crepe and waffle menu, drinks are the last thing on your mind. They promise a fair bit, if we?re honest.

The menu is simply divided into two; sweet and savoury. There?s a fairly epic selection of fillings to stuff inside your pancake- we went for the veggie Le Goat, and the not-so-veggie Chicken Supreme, so as to cover all ground you see.

Review: Crepe Affaire in Trinity Leeds, full crepe

Much like a coffee shop, you order at the counter. You can see the pre-cooked pancakes ? more about that later ? sat on the counter, with a steam-producing contraption sort of balanced on top. The crepes are made in front of you, and are a slower affair than we?d expected, especially as the crepes are pre-formed, ready for heating and filling.

Our order was taken, and we were given a table number and told to take a seat. Apparently the time-saving factor of pre-made crepes didn?t count for a lot, as we were waiting for around 20 minutes for them to arrive with roughly the same amount of customers in the place as there were staff.

To be fair though, they were almost worth waiting for. The fillings were incredibly fresh tasting ? the goats cheese, tomato and spinach filling was light but satisfying, and the Chicken Supreme was practically bursting at the seams with ingredients ? but, it was the pre-formed crepes that let them down. We could only really dream of the French light and fluffy versions that melt on the tongue whilst chewing through the rather rubbery taste left in our mouths.

Review: Crepe Affaire Review, part-eaten

For a savoury light bite on-the-go, Crepe Affaire wouldn?t be a hideously bad option. The fillings do make up for the lack of authenticity in terms of the crepes themselves, and the sweet crepes looked really, really good. As a sit down venture, it felt like an odd mix of coffee house, fast food establishment and restaurant- not quite mastering either and possibly attempting too much.

We can?t say that we?ll be going back there any time soon ? but, with time, who knows. Perfection is an art form, after all. Maybe a little practice is all that?s required here.

Crepe Affaire, Trinity Leeds, LS1 5AT.
