Randi Miller: Starting Something New: 5 Minutes to Being Nothing Like the Last One

I've often compared dating to sales, for I do believe that if you want to see someone again, whether its a customer or a date, you had better treat them well. Everyone needs a plan.

But dating is far more complicated than all that, particularly if you're genuinely excited about getting to know who someone truly is, and especially if you find yourself wildly attracted to her.

First you have to make sure the object of your affection travels the same road you do, and that's often the most frustrating and difficult part. You also need to make sure she knows that you're interested. But you can't actually say that you're interested. You have to do it in such a way as to not freak her out and make her think you're some kind of maniac. This is more difficult than it sounds, even when you're a "celebrity" like me.

You have to let her know that you miss her when you're not together, that you think about her all the time, but you can never actually say those words until some point later. And its hard to say when that time might be. Two dates? Five? At what point does one cease to be a stranger... or a stalker?

You have to let her know that kissing her is something you could do for hours on end without sounding desperate (whether or not you've actually done it). You need to tell her that kissing her is like an amazing dance where you both seem to know each step... but you can't actually say any of these words out loud. Worse, you have to find a way to let her know how completely beautiful you think she is without sounding like a crazy person.

You have to let her know you're happy just sitting next to her, and do it in such a way that she doesn't think you've spent the last five years of your life in a tree.

And I precede these statements with the phrase "you have to let her know" because when you're dating, one of the most important things you can do is make sure she understands how wonderful you think she is. Because if you don't, she'll think you're a jerk, regardless of how careful you are to stop yourself from saying something that might be perceived as too sweet. You see, "sweet" is creepy when it comes from someone new, so you can't just blurt out something sweet, because apparently that's just creepy.

There's a tremendous amount of pressure to not be anything like the last person she dated, because that person was crazy. Amazingly, this is a universal phenomenon, and trust me, the last one was always crazy. Oddly enough, you can never actually verbalize that you're not crazy, because the more you say it, the crazier you seem. Don't ever say you're not a nut.

Yes, it is tricky, and it can be exhausting, but its really quite wonderful, too. Sure, in the early stages of dating, sometimes you end up counting to 10 in your head before speaking, but that's part of the fun. For example:

In my head: "You looked terrific last night, and it felt so amazing to be with you."
Out loud: "Yeah, I had a great time, too."

In my head: "I could have kissed you until morning."
Out loud: "OK, well, have a great day. I'll talk to you later."

Its a bit like trying to make friends with a stray cat (try to resist the obvious but unintentional pun). You want them to know you mean them no harm, but you can't move too fast or they'll run back under the house.

Here, kitty, kitty...

Military-run Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra has ...

Riaz Haq

Military-run Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra has launched manufacturing of Android tablets, Android eBook readers and Windows/Linux notebook computers.
All three products are being offered by?Commercial Products Manufacturing Cell?(CPMC), a join venture of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra (PAC) and Hong Kong-based INNAVTEK. Initial?pricesrange from Rs. 8,000 for PAC eBook reader tablet, to Rs. 15,000 for PAC PAD 1 tablet computer and Rs. 23,500 for PAC nBook notebook.
PAC PAD is the first to be manufactured in Pakistan, but not the first tablet offered for sale in Pakistan. Last year,?PTCL also launched?an Android based thin 7 inch tablet computer with EVO 3G and WiFi connectivity built-in. 3G EVO Tab is a 7 inch touch screen tablet with built-in EVO service to offer wireless broadband Internet on the go in more than 100 cities and towns across Pakistan. Powered by Google Android Froyo 2.2 Operating system, 3G EVO Tab offers support for both 3G and Wi-Fi for an un-interrupted on-the-go connectivity. With a 5 MegaPixel Camera, a variety of built-in applications, 3G EVO Tab lets users browse, snap, share, communicate, navigate, play games and do a lot more on-the go, thereby making it an ideal connectivity solution for users looking for high speed on-the-go 3G connectivity on an Android platform. PTCL 3G EVO Tab offers convenience and speed with three diverse economy packages to suit individual needs and pockets. Its 12-month bundle offer has been very successful with majority sales in this bracket. Customers can get EVO Tab for as low as Rs 7,999 plus 12-month unlimited EVO service, all at Rs 31,999. In addition to the 12-month contract, EVO Tab offers bundled packages based on 3 and 6 month contracts at Rs 27,999 and Rs 29,999, respectively with 3 and 6 month of unlimited EVO service.
PAC?s PAD is being built at Kamra complex that has set up advanced electronics manufacturing facilities used for building avionics for Pakistan?s JF-17 fighter. A PAC press release issued at the launch of the project said that ?for the joint production of JF-17, PAF [Pakistan Air Force] had established sufficient facilities which are appropriate for the production of both defense and commercial products.? CPMC website explains that ?Innavtek jointly developed two products with (PAC?s) Avionics Production Factory which are successfully flying on fleet of our JF-17 aircraft and three more products are under co-development phase.?
History tells us that the Chinese People?s Liberation Army (PLA) has played a huge role in China?s phenomenal industrial progress and its emergence as the factory of the world in the last few decades. Even in the free-market capitalist system of the United States, great inventions like semiconductor chips, computers, the Internet have their origins in the defense establishment.

The US military has played a key role in funding research, development and manufacturing industries to support America?s military-industrial complex and its space program. In spite of some of the well-deserved criticisms of the world?s biggest military-industrial and space complex in America, no one can deny that a lot of innovation, jobs growth and economic expansion has flowed from it to benefit the American society at large.
The latest PAC-Kamra venture is a good example of how military projects can help spawn commercial industries in Pakistan, essentially?replicating the American and the Chinese industrial experience.
With experience and economies of scale, PAC computer products are likely to follow the traditional cost curve of electronics products and become more powerful and affordable for larger numbers of Pakistani customers. Growing domestic market for computers should also attract private investment in the sector and stimulate the national economy by creating more skilled jobs, and help boost human development and productivity.
PAC computer products have the potential to enable huge opportunities for education, communication, business and entertainment. Take distance learning as an example. The quickest and the most cost-effective way to broaden access to education at all levels is through online schools, colleges and universities. Sitting at home in Pakistan, self-motivated learners can watch classroom lectures at the?world?s top universitiesincluding UC Berkeley, MIT and Stanford. More Pakistanis can pursue advanced degrees by enrolling and attending the country?s?Virtual University?that offers instructions to thousands of enrolled students via its website, video streaming and Youtube and television channels.

PAC products can be expected to contribute to the ongoing information revolution in Pakistan by making information and education more accessible to a larger cross-section of Pakistani society. Such a revolution is essential for Pakistan to rapidly move into the 21st century, and reap full?demographic dividend?of its?youthful population?which is naturally attracted to modern gadgetry of computing and communications.
I applaud the Pakistan military for taking a page from the Chinese PLA playbook. As the only robust and well-functioning institution of Pakistani state, the military should do whatever is necessary to strengthen the nation?s industry, economy,?human capital?and national security, regardless of any critics, including Ayesha Siddiqa Agha and her myriad fans. This is the best way forward to a well-educated, industrialized, prosperous and democratic Pakistan in the future.

93% Hugo

Fabulously directed and infused with great magic, Hugo certainly files under above-average fantasy fare. I can't say I fully concur with the overwhelming critical acclaim, but it's a pleasant journey to take with an amazingly rich visual pizazz. Martin Scorsese may be a stranger to this family-friendly genre, but he's certainly no weaker for it, as he plays his new instrument like he's never done anything else. Apart from the endearing leads played by Asa Butterfield and Chlo? Grace Moretz, I also took a great liking to the wonderful supporting cast. Sacha Baron Cohen is a little more downplayed than usual (no green mankinis this time around), but quite memorable nevertheless as the tenacious station inspector Gustav. As can be said for Sir Ben Kingsley, who brings a lot of passion to his character, as the old toy-maker Georges M?li?s. Not to mention the brief, but excellent performances by Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer and Jude Law. Sadly, not everything runs like clockwork though. While the film is enjoyable all the way, the progression of the plot sometimes drags and loses momentum, which is one of the reasons why I can't allow myself to give it a higher rating than I have. It also feels a tad outstretched and would have done good in leaving out some of the less essential scenes. Another thing I wasn't too excited about is the blue & orange color palettes. It's become a common trend in Hollywood these days to apply these sort of "mood-setting" touches, but personally I think it just serves to diminish the visual impact. An enchanting and painstakingly crafted piece of film-making nevertheless though, that if anything shows that Scorsese haven't lost any of his flairs for heartfelt story-telling. My only regret is that I never saw it in the cinema, as I'm sure the neat 3D-elements would have added a lot to the experience. For more of my reviews, feel free to visit my movie page on Facebook:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mikes-Movie-Reviews/281824101875153

Chinese service sells fake 'sent from my iPhone' messages

6 hrs.

Just when you didn't think that the world of knockoff products could get any stranger, Chinese merchants start offering a service which allows people to pay for fake "sent from my iPhone" messages.

The Financial Times' Kathrin Hille reports that?merchants on Taobao, a Chinese consumer-to-consumer online market place, are offering to hack into the accounts of folks who are using QQ???an instant messaging tool which is particularly popular in the region ??and "make it appear as if they were sending their posts from an iPhone."

The service costs roughly one dollar per month and all someone needs to do is send his or her QQ username and password to one of the merchants offering to add the popular Apple tagline.

It's a bit difficult to believe that anyone?would not only hand over his or her instant messaging service login information to a stranger, but also pay for such a silly service. Then again, "[t]he iPhone is too expensive," reminds one of the posts on Taobao. "If you don?t want to spend that money, then fake it!"

Kodak _ and film _ saying goodbye to the Oscars

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've passed away. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old company has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Eastman Kodak Co. division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Fashionable House Flooring with the Floating Floors in Perth ...

One of the popular choices for a do-it-yourself home improvement project is the floating floors. It is easy to install and one will not need further assistance if there is enough tools and knowledge. But it is still best to let the experts do it. When choosing this type of floor, you will have to consider all the available designs and colors so you can match it to your home furnishings, but this is not a major problem as most of the designs are perfect for any home schemes. With several types and styles of floating floors to choose from, this flooring option will more than likely fit into any budget. It is also easy to clean and maintain, especially if you will regularly see to it that every corner is checked once in a while. Getting the floating floors in Perth for your homes is indeed a wise decision you can do for the fashion and style of your house.

Local Hospitals Concerned About Cancer Drug Shortage ? CBS ...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? Eight-month-old Elena Schoneveld has leukemia. An injectable drug called methotrexate is part of her treatment.

?The fact of the matter is it?s curable. There?s a lot of cancers that are not curable,? says her father, Mark Schoneveld.

But a crisis is looming.

?Methotrexate is the drug that is really in national crisis, and methotrexate is one of the main drugs we use to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common leukemia in children,? says Dr. A Kim Ritchey, a pediatric oncologist at Children?s Hospital Pittsburgh. ?There are some hospitals that are probably going to run out in days.?

Hundreds of medicines are in short supply ? 28 of them are cancer drugs that hundreds of thousands of people need ? a relatively smaller number than the millions that take other drugs, which is one reason reserves are running low.

Also, drug makers have stopped making them because of low profitability of these now generic medicines.

?It?s probably more complicated than, that it?s just a low return drug,? Dr. Ritchey adds. ?I know that there have been problems with supplies, with getting the ingredients to make the methotrexate. Quality control has been an issue. So I think there are multiple factors.?

So far, Children?s Hospital has enough methotrexate, with the pharmacy keeping close tabs on supply.

?So far we have been able to manage it,? says Dr. Ritchey.

For some other types of cancer drugs, doctors can make substitutions. But in this case, there are no alternatives.

?So it?s really kind of a national crisis and almost a national shame that we don?t have these drugs to give to these kids,? Dr. Ritchey says. ?We?ll have to deny children life-saving treatment. That?s what we?re going to have to do.?

Congressional bills have been introduced to give the Food and Drug Administration more power to deal with the issue.

?It?s tough, but I have hope they?ll figure out a way,? says Mark Schoneveld.

The way, in the short term, is stepped up production from three companies that make the drug, and companies that stopped making it will be releasing their emergency supplies.

But how to handle the overall problem of these drug shortages for the long term is yet to be worked out.

Israel to buy Italian military training jets (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel has reached a $1 billion preliminary deal to buy 30 Italian military training jets, Israeli defense officials said Thursday, providing a long-awaited upgrade to what is widely viewed as the most advanced air force in the Middle East.

The agreement, which still needs formal government approval, marked the end of a long competition between Italy and South Korea over the lucrative sale.

Israel announced it would buy the M-346, made by the Italian company Alenia Aermacchi and designed for low-cost flights. The aircraft will replace American Skyhawks, which the Israeli Air Force has trained with for 40 years. As early as 2008, the Israeli air force announced it needed to replace the antiquated jets.

Italy will reciprocate the Israeli purchase by buying $1 billion in Israeli defense equipment, Israel's Defense Ministry said.

The ministry's director general, Udi Shani, said the offset deal enabled Israel to make the large purchase in a "harsh budgetary reality."

South Korea hoped to sell its T-50 aircraft to Israel and had issued a $1.6 billion counteroffer including buying the expensive Iron Dome anti-rocket system, defense officials said. As Israel considered its options, South Korea complained about a lack of transparency in the deal.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations.

In a letter to South Korea, Shani wrote that "after close analysis of both the proposals, and at the conclusion of a long and comprehensive review process, it was decided that the Italian proposal was the most efficient choice for Israel's Ministry of Defense."

He cited the suitability of the jets to the "direct needs" of the Israeli air force, the cost and the "significant offset conditions."

The deal only has initial approval and needs official authorization from Israel's defense minister, the government, and the Israeli parliament. Defense officials said they expect the agreement to get the final green light, and the planes to be delivered in 2014.

Alenia Aermacchi noted that the aircraft has just been delivered to the Italian air force and, shortly, will also be in service with Singapore's military.

"We would like to thank the Israeli Ministry of Defense for their trust in and their choice of the M-346, a fact that confirms the product's excellence," Alenia Aermacchi's CEO Giuseppe Giordo said in a statement.

Israeli possesses a sophisticated air force of U.S.-made F-15 and F-16 warplanes, and its pilots spend considerable time on training flights. Even reservists, for instance, must spend one day a week in the air. Officials said the new planes would be critical for Israel to maintain its edge.

The need for a strong air force is especially critical at a time when Israel has been hinting at potential military action against Iran's nuclear program.

Military analyst Yiftach Shapir of the Institute for National Security Studies said the new planes would give an important boost, noting the aging Skyhawks are "long past their life service."

"Training will be better, pilots will be better prepared for the combat aircraft they will be flying, and everything will be cheaper because the aging aircraft really needed a lot of maintenance," he said.

Walls

Do walls ever keep people safe, or do they give illusion of safety while also locking you in one mindset--much like Suburbias become?

I believe this is true and it's been shown by both metaphorical (Iron Curtain) and Physical (Great Wall of China) to Modern (Mexican Border).

By doing this, people are psychologically controlled and fear of outside world. Walls in my own opinion are meant to keep people in, not keep others out as evidenced by the Berlin Wall.

We help the multi-nationals
when they cry out protect us.
The locals scream and shout a bit,
but we don?t let that affect us.
We?re here to lend a helping hand
in case they don?t elect us.
How dare they buy our products
yet still they don?t respect us.

What Are The Risks Of Day Trading? ? Making Money on the Web

If you are looking for a truly risky venture for your investment dollar then you may want to investigate the roller coaster ride that many know as day trading. While those that swear by it for making and breaking fortunes will swear there is a formula those that have been raked onto the rocky shores of this particular trading business will be the first to tell you that their luck ran out. Whether it?s luck or science, day trading for many has proven to be risky business at best.

The Risks

In order to be successful in day trading you must be absolutely prepared to lose. You do not have time to think about failure, as it is likely at any moment. This is a lightening quick business and sometimes the market moves much more quickly than your fingers. This can result in unexpected losses as well as unexpected gains along the way. These bumps in the road are nothing compared to the highs and lows of actually being a day trader though. Forget the finances for a moment and consider the risks of heart attacks, heart palpitations, and strokes brought on the by excitement and heartburn (not that this can bring about a stroke but it sounded good) of the moment.

Day trading is very taxing. You must constantly watch your computer throughout the day for signs of life from your stock and act immediately. This is a high stress job that many simply cannot handle long term. Unfortunately day trading must become your day job because you have little time or energy to invest in anything else. There are those that get a huge charge from day trading but this is not a job for the average citizen it takes a huge toll on their health much too quickly-especially those that are sensitive to stress as it is.

Perhaps the biggest risk is that you can become addicted to the highs and lows. This is a huge problem because once you become addicted it is much more difficult to temper your purchases and counter your losses. When you aren?t looking at it with a clear mind and unhampered perspective it doesn?t seem nearly as dangerous as it can be. Lives are ruined financially because of irresponsible day trading and addictions to day trading that are much like addictions to gambling. If you suspect you or someone you love is the victim of this particular addiction please get him or her or yourself the help that is needed as quickly as possible.

You should also understand that day trading isn?t investing in the strictest sense of the world. Day traders don?t invest in stocks so much as they trade stocks and while some may claim this is a simple case of semantics there are a few major differences. Investors hold onto stocks for a little while with the expectation of gains over time while traders buy and sell quickly hoping for immediate trading. Investors research and study a specific stock before jumping in while traders study patterns and formulas and hope they made the right decision.

Investing in and of itself is risky; day trading adds another layer of risk to the equation. If you think you have what it takes to participate in day trading you need to keep in mind that you should make sure that you have a few other options in place for your investment future that require a little less risk.

Sorrento Beach Shack ? perthmunchkin

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside?.

Beside it?.. not so much in it

Never been a huge beach person?.. but it is delightful to lunch in view of the ocean. And such an opportunity presented when I bought myself a voucher to the Beach Shack Caf? in Sorrento, way back when, and finally got around to using it before it expired at the end of February.

I had actually bought two vouchers and given one to my parents and they?d only used theirs the week or two prior. They had enjoyed themselves, but had added that if it was a hot day then it would be a very warm spot to eat lunch, given that it was basically a tin shed with just fans rotating the hot air down onto you.

I was conscious of this and incredibly grateful when the hot weather took a breather and it was high 20?s at most on the Saturday when we rocked up. Our reserved table was closer to the front, which was nice, we got a bit of breeze and there was a really good busker playing her guitar and singing so that made for some nice entertainment.

The voucher was incredible value ? $24 for $100 worth of food and drinks. So we could choose 2 mains and 2 cold drinks, then 2 desserts and 2 hot drinks. We suspected that we weren?t not going to leave hungry. So we started by ordering a lemon, lime and bitters?

It was quite an extensive menu ? plenty of burgers and salads, then slightly larger options like steaks, chicken parmiganas and what I went for the pork ribs. They also offered pizzas, but only after 5pm, which I was a little disappointed about. I could have easily smashed a pizza? perhaps another time.

A slight aside?? they advertised a pizza on their menu called the Shack Attack??. I found myself bemused at its description. Sparked an interesting response when I posted it on my facebook wall?. Most people thought it didn?t really fit, while others argued that the meaning of ?awesome? was being misinterpreted. Hey each to their own I suppose.

So moving on from that and as mentioned I decided to tackle the pork ribs. Tackle being the operative word, because geeze louise ribs are messy business. Yes the sweet sticky sauce was delicious, but all that effort, for what really doesn?t seem like that much meat?. hmmm? such is ribs I suppose. The chips that came along with them were deliciously crisp and tasted a treat when dipped in the sauce. And the side salad provided a refreshing finish to the meal. In all, I hadn?t minded it, just messy and well, hard work. Plus being unco when I had borrowed GG?s steak knife to slice and dice the ribs, I had managed to stab myself in the finger. But that?s really more my fault than the ribs?.. or is it ;)

Across the table GG ordered the surf and turf (huge shock there I know :) ). He had a similarly generous serve of chips and salad, while the steak was perhaps a little on the skinny side from where I was sitting. The prawns looked nice though and there was plenty of creamy garlic sauce to dip them in. He enjoyed his meal. Agreed that the steak wasn?t one of the better ones he had had, but said that it was still decent, as his empty plate testified.

Then it was time for dessert. Neither of us felt like a hot drink, so we just went with the Warm Brownie Sundae. When it arrived it wasn?t quite how I imagined it would be served. I thought the brownie would be more cakey, but this was more like a denser slice ? with little cubes of it throughout the sundae. Then there was oodles of cream and ice cream and super sweet berry coulis. Then at the bottom was a generous pour of chocolate syrup. Probably not much favourite dessert of all time, but in terms of a sugar hit, I was well prepared to be bouncing off the walls after all that syrupy goodness.

Service had been friendly and prompt, can?t argue with the value and loction wise it was all very picturesque in front of the marina. Not a bad spot for a quick bite.

Scoop Business ? Tax relief for some former Hanover investors, IRD ...

Tax relief for some former Hanover investors, IRD says

Feb. 13 (BusinessDesk) ? Investors in the failed Hanover and United finance companies who accepted shares of Allied Farmers in a debt-for-equity swap may be entitled to deduct any losses incurred when they sold their holdings, Inland Revenue says.

The investors were issued with Allied shares at 20.69 cents apiece, a price they promptly fell below. Allied?s main business, finance company Allied Nationwide, has since failed and the shares last traded at 4.8 cents. The latest price is a huge gain from the sub-1 cent levels it plumbed before a share consolidation trimmed stock on issue to 90.8 million from more than 2 billion.

Inland Revenue ?will consider cases whereby a taxpayer can demonstrate that their main purpose in acquiring the Allied Farmers shares was to resell them,? said IRD group tax counsel Graham Tubb.

The investors would have to show intent to sell the shares as soon as possible after they were issued in 2009, such as sell instructions to their broker.

?The amount of the deduction that may be claimed is likely to be less than the amount that investors may have invested with Hanover and/or United,? the tax department said.

British police arrest 5 at Murdoch's Sun newspaper

Chris Helgren / Reuters

An advertisement for The Sun newspaper is seen on a billboard outside News International's Wapping headquarters in London, Jan. 28

LONDON -- British police on Saturday arrested five senior members of staff at News Corporation's flagship newspaper The Sun, the company said, as part of investigations into alleged payments to police by journalists for information.

The payments investigation, dubbed Operation Elveden, is part of a wider probe into illegal news gathering practices that have rocked Britain's political, media and police establishments and last year prompted the closure of News Corp.'s Sunday paper, The News of the World.

"I'm as shocked as anyone by today's arrests but am determined to lead The Sun through these difficult times. I have a brilliant staff and we have a duty to serve our readers and will continue to do that. Our focus is on putting out Monday's newspaper," Sun editor Dominic Mohan said in a statement.

A former News of the World executive, who requested anonymity, said The Sun's current deputy editor Geoff Webster, picture editor John Edwards and chief reporter John Kay were among those arrested Saturday. Sky News and other British media reported that chief foreign correspondent Nick Parker and reporter John Sturgis were also being questioned. News Corp. would not publicly confirm the identities of those detained.

A 39-year-old female employee at Britain's defense ministry, a 36-year-old male member of the armed forces and a 39-year-old serving police officer with Surrey Police were also arrested in an early morning raid, police said.

The Ministry of Defense declined to comment.

The latest arrests at The Sun, Britain's best-selling daily newspaper, come after the arrest of four current and former staff at the newspaper last month, raising questions about the publication's viability.

Saturday's arrests were the result of information from News Corp.'s Management and Standards Committee (MSC), a fact-finding group the firm set up in a bid to rescue its ravaged reputation.

"The MSC provided the information to the Elveden investigation which led to today's arrests ... News Corporation remains committed to ensuring that unacceptable news gathering practices by individuals in the past will not be repeated," New Corp said in a statement.

The MSC's work could lead to further damaging revelations about journalists bribing police that could prompt calls for the Sun's demise.

The once hugely popular News of the World was closed last year by Murdoch after accusations that its reporters hacked the mobile phone messages of celebrities and victims of crime caused a public outcry.

Murdoch to quit newspapers?
"This is huge. It will raise some very serious questions about the viability of The Sun .... You then start to ask questions about the extent to which News Corp and Murdoch in particular, may want to start getting out of newspapers all together," said Steven Barnett, professor of communications at Westminster University, London.

Barnett said Saturday's arrests were particularly damaging because they included current staff and were not related to historical actions by former employees, and also because they come after arrests and office raids at The Sun last month.

Murdoch also owns The Times broadsheet newspaper, which this year admitted that one of its former reporters had hacked a phone, and the Wall Street Journal U.S. financial newspaper.

Meanwhile, U.S. authorities are stepping up investigations, including an FBI criminal inquiry, into possible violations by Murdoch media employees of a U.S. law banning corrupt payments to foreign officials such as police, law enforcement and corporate sources.

Police said 40 people had been arrested in connection with three police investigations into illegal news gathering practices, but that no one had yet been charged.

Allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World prompted Britain's parliament to summon Murdoch and his executive son James to explain themselves last year.

Many inside and outside parliament have long accused Murdoch of wielding too much political influence through his newspapers.

The scandal's most high profile scalps so far include two top police officials, who resigned over the handling of initial investigations into media malpractice; Rebekah Brooks, a former chief executive of Murdoch's London papers; and Andy Coulson, a former Murdoch editor who became Prime Minister David Cameron's media adviser.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this story.

Do Men Really Fear Commitment? | SNS Post

?

By JONATHON ASLAY

http://understandmennow.com

?

Men don?t really fear commitment as some of us might have you believe. What we men really fear is making the wrong choice?

Yesterday, I was interviewed on live television for a Valentine?s Day Special on an ABC Talk-show

They say that public speaking ranks as one of the highest fears someone might face?even higher than dying.

So as I prepared for this segment, my girlfriend gave me a GREAT suggestion.

Rather than focusing on the negative, she told me to say this in my head?

?HOW COOL IS THIS??

?How cool is this???I remarked.

Yes,?that?s right. Cool is associated with FUN.?So?how can there be fear when we are having fun?

So, how does this relate to men and commitment? Well?

When it comes to relationships, men don?t actually fear commitment. What men really fear is making the wrong choice.

Often, people who fear making decisions tend to vacillate and procrastinate in an effort to avoid the choices they must make.

Making decisions requires confidence.

It requires a degree of certainty.

The irony is that fear of commitment may mask a desperate?desire?for the intimacy and security that comes from a healthy long-term relationship.

Sometimes, we fear most what we most need.

What men want most is to feel safe.

What men crave most is a sense of home.

Sometimes men get so bound up in what is wrong now, we stop looking at how things could be right?in the future.

There are many benefits, both physical and mental, to being in a healthy relationship.

Women know this, men do not.

So, what can you do?

As my sweetheart said before I left for the studio:

?HOW COOL IS THIS??

How cool is your relationship?

How much fun are you really having together?

Do you play together?

Are you laughing together?

Men don?t fear fun, right?!

Is your relationship FUN?

Fun is a cornerstone to a healthy relationship.

When I wrote my eCourse? The Relationships Men Commit To and Why,?I included one key to commitment.

On page 102 of the ebook, the chapter is called: ?Keys to the Kingdom?.

There are four keys.

Have you heard of them?

Can you guess what they are?

Are you thinking, or do you already know?

Without a doubt, FUN is on the top of the list.

Fun is associated with cool.

How cool is this?

How cool is my relationship?

Men have no problem making a decision when it involves FUN.

When the choice is fun, the decision is already made.

He chooses YOU!

Super Bowl XLVIGetty Images

MDS posted reaction the other day to one of the dumbest things written in the aftermath of the Patriots loss in Super Bowl XLVI. The post got a huge reaction. You guys mostly agreed with MDS.

Before it gets too late, I wanted to pass along links to three of the smartest things I?ve seen written about the Patriots loss.

Tom Curran of CSNNE.com dived deep into Tom Brady?s performance against the Giants. Curran compared the criticism on Brady after the game to New Year?s Eve: Amateur hour.

The difference between winning and losing a Super Bowl can be frustratingly small. Random. If Wes Welker holds on to that pass, we are probably talking about Brady carrying this Patriots team all year. Now he?s not the same old Tom Brady.

Jackie MacMullan of ESPNBoston.com tried to get the city of Boston to take a deep breath. The Patriots were narrowly beat by a better team. Sometimes that?s hard to accept.

Howard Bryant of ESPN.com wrote about our culture?s focus on negativity and the losing team in sports. It?s a great column and a great point. There has been more talk about Billy Cundiff, Lee Evans, Kyle Williams, and Wes Welker the last few weeks than the victorious teams.?

?Media and expectations have changed everything,? Charles Barkley told Bryant. ?Everyone?s afraid of it because if you miss a shot, if you miss a play, that overshadows the whole series, your whole career. So guys just want a ring, but they don?t want to risk losing. If you don?t want to risk losing, you shouldn?t even be playing.?

This post won?t get the same reaction as the one where Brady was called ?hideous? by an attention-seeking writer from Boston.com. But hopefully the pieces above better reflect some of the great writing done by Boston writers in the aftermath of another Super Bowl loss.

HBT: Rangers, Andrus agree to 3-year deal

UPDATE: The deal is believed to be in the range of $14-15 million total and doesn?t include any club options, reports Rosenthal and Morosi.

The Rangers likely would have preferred to get some of his free agent years as part of the deal, but that was probably a long shot given that Andrus is represented by Scott Boras. In the meantime, it?s nice to have some cost certainty with a very talented shortstop.

9:18 PM: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com are reporting that the Rangers and Elvis Andrus have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year contract, pending a physical.

Terms aren?t yet available, but the new deal will cover all of his arbitration seasons and set him up for free agency following the 2014 season. Andrus, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, filed for?$3.6 million and was offered $2.65 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month.

Already one of the better defensive shortstops in the sport, the 23-year-old Andrus owns a .271/.340/.343 batting line over his first three seasons in the majors. He?batted .279/.347/.361 with five home runs, 60 RBI, 37 stolen bases, 96 runs scored and a .708 OPS in 2011.

Russians reportedly hit buried Antarctic lake

Several Russian news outlets are reporting that Russian scientists have successfully drilled to Antarctica's Lake Vostok, a massive liquid lake cut off from daylight for 14 million years and buried beneath 2 miles (3.7 kilometers) of ice.

The lake is the object of a years-long project to study its waters, which may house life forms new to science.

The news appears to have originated from Ria Novosti, a state-run news agency, which ran the following quote from an unnamed source with no affiliation: "Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3,768 meters (12,362 feet) and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake."

The same news report went on to discuss an old theory that Nazis built a secret base at Lake Vostok in the 1930s, and that German submarines brought Hitler and Eva Braun's remains to Antarctica for cloning purposes following the German surrender in World War II.?

"There are a lot of rumors going around about penetrating the lake, and we need the Russian program to make the official announcement," said John Priscu, a University of Montana microbiologist and veteran Antarctic researcher who has been involved in Lake Vostok investigations for years.

"If they were successful, their efforts will transform the way we do science in Antarctica and provide us with an entirely new view of what exists under the vast Antarctic ice sheet," Priscu told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

It appears there has been no official confirmation of the team's success. There are no press releases on the website of Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the government agency that oversees the country's polar science expeditions.

Possible cold-loving life
Lake Vostok, about the size of Lake Ontario, is the largest lake on the icy continent. Scientists estimate the lake itself is roughly 14 million years old ? the age of the ice sheet that covers it ? and that the water currently in the lake is roughly 1 million years old.

Scientists believe the lake could be home to cold-loving microbial life adapted to living in total darkness. The organisms likely survive using mechanisms similar to the ever-increasing parade of creatures that have been discovered living in the total darkness of hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean, deriving energy from minerals in seafloor rocks.

Today's news follows on the heels of other unsourced reporting from American news outlets last week, which claimed the scientists were lost, and that something sinister was afoot at Vostok Station. Priscu, who has been in contact with Russian science headquarters in St. Petersburg over the course of the 2011-2012 field season, has firmly refuted such reports.

  1. More science news from msnbc.com

    3. Jellyfish are taking over!!! Oh ... never mind
    4. Guinea pigs: Easy-to-pack pets for explorers

The Vostok team has been racing against the approach of Antarctica's brutal winter weather. Extreme cold can prevent aircraft from operating, and could maroon the team at the station during the total darkness and bitter temperatures of austral winter.

Temperatures have already plunged below minus 49 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 45 degrees Celsius), and Priscu said it was likely the team would need to leave by this week at the latest.

Race to test for life
Even if the Russian team has reached the lake, they will be forced to wait until next season to actually sample the water because of the type of drill they're using, which can bring back only ice ? not liquid water ? from the deep borehole. The water must freeze over the Antarctic winter before researchers can lay hands on it, to see what organisms might be living in Lake Vostok.

Two other nations are mounting projects to drill into ancient Antarctic lakes hidden beneath miles of ice, and with drill technology that can fetch liquid water samples for analysis in the space of days. Both lakes are in West Antarctica, in conditions slightly less brutal than those at Vostok Station, which holds the record for coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth: minus 129 degrees F (minus 89 degrees C), in July 1983.

The British are positioned to start drilling at Antarctica's Lake Ellsworth in autumn 2012, and an American team hopes to begin drilling to the Whillans Ice Stream, a network of subglacial waterways, in January 2013.

If the Russians have indeed reached Lake Vostok this week, it could be a close contest to see who will be first to test whether life can go on in the cold darkness beneath Antarctica's ice.

Tony Mitchell?s ill-timed suspension hurts Alabama

Any momentum Alabama generated surviving Arkansas and Ole Miss at home last week vanished Monday when coach Anthony Grant announced that the Tide's second leading scorer has been suspended indefinitely.

Tony Mitchell will miss at least Alabama's road game at Auburn on Tuesday night as a result of conduct detrimental to the team. Grant told the Tuscaloosa News that the suspension was a result of "an accumulation" of issues, but he would not elaborate further.

The timing of Mitchell's suspension comes two days after he came off the bench for the first time this season in a double overtime 69-67 win over Ole Miss. Mitchell drew postgame praise from Grant after scoring 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting and grabbed four offensive rebounds.

"Tony stepped up and was terrific down the stretch," Grant said. He took a blow to the head in the first half and had to sit for a while in the second half, but he was dying to get back in there and he really made some plays for us there in the end."

Whatever happened in between Saturday night and Monday morning could be costly for an Alabama team that has slipped toward the NCAA tournament bubble due to a lackluster start in SEC play. The Tide (15-7, 4-4) still have a top 40 RPI thanks to a strong strength of schedule, yet their best wins (Wichita State, Purdue and VCU) all came in November.

Mitchell has not been as efficient a scorer as he was a year ago when Alabama missed the NCAA tournament despite a 12-4 SEC record, but the high-flying wing is still averaging 13.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. An extended absence would be ill-timed with the Tide facing important road games against Auburn and LSU this week, followed by a golden opportunity for a much-needed marquee win at home against Florida on Feb. 14.?

Alabama probably needs a minimum of five wins in its final eight SEC games to feel confident about its NCAA tournament chances. The uncertainty surrounding Mitchell's place on the team certainly won't help the Tide achieve that.
