Box CEO Aaron Levie Talks About His Love/Hate Relationship With ...

Aaron Levie grew up in Microsoft's backyard.

Today, Box's young CEO faces a strange problem with Microsoft. Redmond is Box's biggest competitor AND one its most important partners.

Box's mainstay is a secure file-sharing and collaboration product. One of Microsoft's key products is SharePoint, which is, yes, a file-sharing and collaboration product that's a key part of Microsoft's Office suite.

SharePoint software can run on site or on the cloud, while Box is cloud-only. But many times, Box and Microsoft compete head-to-head for enterprise deals.

Yet Microsoft's Windows and Windows Phone teams are buddies with Box, the maker of an app that's important for their platforms.

In a recent interview with BI, Levie talked about his relationship with Microsoft and if it worries him.

You say you've been winning a lot of enterprise customers because they can now build custom apps on Box. They choose Box instead of, say, Office 365, Microsoft's cloud version of Office?

A lot of this is impossible with Office 365?not really impossible, but we are farther ahead of the curve. I invite you to go through Apple's iOS app store and find all the apps that integrate with Office 365. It's not going to be a long list. There's probably 75 to 100 apps today that integrate with Box.

One of the reasons Microsoft bought Yammer was to teach it about the freemium model. Can a classic enterprise company learn how to do viral/freemium?

Yes. Absolutely. Mostly because I think anything's possible. But there are a lot of caveats. A company starts to form a certain kind of DNA, a certain way of operating. You begin to develop processes and you begin to develop values as an organization that mean you're going to be really good at one kind of sales model, or development model and not so good at another. That's just the nature of building competencies.

Microsoft and a lot of enterprise software companies have built a competency in large sales forces, large channel relationships, very significant and strong relationships with CIOs, but not with the end user and not with the sort of bottoms-up approach to how enterprise software is delivered today.

Yammer has a chance to inject more of that DNA into Microsoft. A lot of this will come down to the motivation of both parties.

We have a hybrid model. The reason we have 12 million users is that we a freemium service and people spread it within an organization. Then we have an inside sales force.

What if Yammer really teaches them how to do create free, viral enterprise apps? Does Microsoft concern you?

Totally. Microsoft is our No. 1 competitor. At the same time, its also a significant partner. That's the interesting thing about how the ecosystem is changing. You end up competing in one product area and you end up partnering with another.? It's difficult to balance that.? We work with the Windows Phone team and the Windows 8 team, but we obviously don't work with the SharePoint team.

You grew up in Washington State, right?

Yes. Seattle. I was right underneath Microsoft the whole time.

Did you ever want to work for Microsoft?

No.

Millions of black holes spotted

A space telescope has added to its list of spectacular finds, spotting millions of supermassive black holes and blisteringly hot, "extreme" galaxies.

The finds, by US space agency Nasa's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (Wise), once lay obscured behind dust.

But Wise can see in wavelengths correlated with heat, seeing for the first time some of the brightest objects in the Universe.

The haul will help astronomers work out how galaxies and black holes form.

It is known that most large galaxies host black holes at their centres, sometimes feeding on nearby gas, dust and stars and sometimes spraying out enough energy to halt star formation altogether.

How the two evolve together has remained a mystery, and the Wise data are already yielding some surprises.

Wise gives astronomers what is currently a unique view on the cosmos, looking at wavelengths of light far beyond those we can see but giving information that we cannot get from wavelengths we can.

Black holes

  • These are regions of space where gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape
  • One way they can form is when huge stars collapse in on themselves
  • So-called supermassive black holes sit at the centres of galaxies, including the Milky Way

Among its other discoveries, in 2011 Wise spotted in a "Trojan" asteroid ahead of the Earth in its orbit.

But with the latest results, Wise has come into its own as an unparalleled black hole hunter.

"We've got the black holes cornered," said Daniel Stern of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), lead author of one of the three studies presented on Wednesday.

Dr Stern and his colleagues used the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (Nustar) space telescope to examine the X-rays coming out of the black hole candidates spotted by Wise, presenting their findings in a paper to appear in Astrophysical Journal.

"Wise is finding them across the full sky, while Nustar is giving us an entirely new look at their high-energy X-ray light and learning what makes them tick," he said.

The other two studies presented - one already published in Astrophysical journal and another yet to appear - focussed on extremely hot, bright galaxies that have until now remained hidden: hot dust-obscured galaxies, or hot-Dogs.

There are so far about 1,000 candidate galaxies, some of which can out-shine our Sun by a factor of 100 trillion.

"These dusty, cataclysmically forming galaxies are so rare Wise had to scan the entire sky to find them," said Peter Eisenhardt of JPL, lead author of the paper describing Wise's first hot-Dog find.

"We are also seeing evidence that these record-setters may have formed their black holes before the bulk of their stars. The 'eggs' may have come before the 'chickens'."

The data from the Wise mission are made publicly available so that scientists outside the collaboration can also carry out their own studies, so the future will hold a wealth of studies from these extreme and otherwise hidden corners of the Universe.

Mophie Outride ruggedized action case for iPhone handson

Sure, you've been tempted to strap your iPhone to that ski helmet for a homemade action cam solution, but ultimately, you respect Apple's warranty, as limited as it may be. Mophie's new Outride ruggedized case equips your fragile smartphone with a ruggedized shell, protecting the device while also serving as a helmet / bicycle / flat-surface mount. The thick plastic case includes a raised lens module, and is available in both water-resistant and above ground flavors. That first version is still undergoing testing, according to Mophie reps, so we don't know just how far it can dunk with letting down its guard to condensation, but we do know that it will retail for $149. A land-only version will also be available for $129, and unlike the sealed model, your iPhone's display will still be exposed, giving you full access to the device. Both cases include a dedicated shutter release, which works in camera mode, letting you snap away under the sea. They also ship with a trio of mounts for your helmet, handle bars or a flat surface. Catch a closer look at Outride in the gallery below.

Crash Dieting Could Give 5-Year Health Boost Your Health Journal ...

From Zee News?..

Eating an ultra-low calorie diet for just a few weeks could have long-term health benefits, Scottish experts have suggested.

Experts at Aberdeen?s Robert Gordon University say the ?crash diets? ? where people consume less than 800 calories-a-day ? lead to significant weight loss, improve overweight people?s blood pressure, increase fertility and reduce the symptoms of asthma.

A team from the university?s Centre for Obesity Research and Epidemiology reviewed 32 studies which had looked into the effects of very-low-energy-diets (VLEDs) on obesity and related health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The long-term benefits of the crash diets showed significant weight loss in almost all the previous studies.

?We have found that long-term benefits such as improvements in cardiovascular risk, respiratory disorders and fertility are achievable with the use of these short-burst diets,? the Daily Express quoted Dr Catherine Rolland, a member of the research team, as saying.

?The knock-on effect was seen for at least five years after the diet ended,? Rolland added.

Myanmar takes 2,000 exiles off blacklist

Myanmar has removed about 2,000 exiles from an immigration blacklist drawn up by the former junta to allow them to return home as part of political reforms, the authorities said Tuesday.

"The people taken off the blacklist are civil servants who fled Myanmar a long time ago," an information ministry official told AFP.

"More than 6,000 former civil servants from government ministries were blacklisted. Some 2,000 were taken off today," he said. "They can come back to the country freely. The authorities will decide later whether to remove the others."

Several million people fled the country to escape the corrupted economy and political repression under army rule which ended last year, leaving a shortage of professionals to help manage economic and political change.

Many government workers and intellectuals left after a student-led uprising in 1988 that was brutally crushed by the military. Journalists who fled to work overseas were also blacklisted.

Since taking office last year, President Thein Sein has overseen a number of dramatic changes such as the release of hundreds of political prisoners and the election of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to parliament.

The former general -- who came to power following an election marred by widespread complaints of cheating and intimidation -- in May urged the millions who had fled the nation to return.

One small step: Was Neil Armstrong misquoted?

The millions worldwide who watched the Apollo moon landing in 1969 heard Commander Neil Armstrong say, rather ungrammatically,?"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But a 2006 analysis of the audio indicates that the astronaut did not omit the definite article.

    By Life's Little Mysteries Staff,?Life's Little Mysteries / August 27, 2012

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong is pictured here, shortly after collecting a sample of lunar dust and rocks. At his feet is the handle for the sample collection tool.

    NASA/Andy Chaikin/collectSPACE.com

Upon taking a "small step" onto the surface of the moon in 1969, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one-liners. But strangely, what he actually said is far from clear.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // --> When Apollo 11 touched down on the Lunar surface the whole world stopped. Relive the moment when humanity took its giant leap forward.

Listeners back on Earth heard, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But?Armstrong, who died Saturday?(Aug. 25) at the age of 82, maintained afterwards that he actually said something slightly different: "That's one small step for?a?man..."

"It's just that people just didn't hear [the 'a']," Armstrong told the press after the Apollo 11 mission.

That little indefinite article makes a big difference, semantically speaking. Without it, "man" abstractly represents all of humanity, just like "mankind." Thus, the quote is essentially, ''That's one small step for mankind, one giant leap for mankind."?[Listen to 'One Small Step' Quote]

Despite his initial adamance that he got the grammar right by including the indefinite article, Armstrong acknowledged at a 30-year anniversary event in 1999 that he couldn't hear himself utter the "a" in the audio recording of his moonwalk transmission, according to the?Associated Press.

But then, in 2006, computer programmer Peter Shann Ford might have?vindicated Armstrong.

Ford downloaded the audio recording of the moon man's words from a NASA website and analyzed the statement with software that allows disabled people to communicate via computers using their nerve impulses.

In a graphical representation of sound waves of the famous sentence, Ford said he found evidence that the missing "a" had been spoken after all: It was a 35-millisecond-long bump of sound between "for" and "man" that would have been too brief for human ears to hear.

"I have reviewed the data and Peter Ford's analysis of it, and I find the technology interesting and useful," Armstrong said in a statement. ''I also find his conclusion persuasive. Persuasive is the appropriate word."

And so was "a," whether spoken or not.

Pressure on Romney to pick Ryan as VP

NEW YORK (Reuters) - With Republican Mitt Romney on the verge of choosing a vice presidential running mate, conservatives have mounted a concerted campaign to boost the chances of Representative Paul Ryan, the architect of his party's controversial budget-cutting plan.

Often likening Ryan to Ronald Reagan, conservatives say the Wisconsin lawmaker's supposed drawbacks as a candidate - mostly stemming from the steep cuts in social safety net programs he has proposed - are actually strengths that could bring heft, content and perhaps a spark to Romney's campaign.

Romney, in an interview Thursday with NBC News, gave no indication who he might pick, but outlined what he was looking for in a running mate.

"I certainly expect to have a person that has a strength of character, a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country," he said.

Despite the nation's economic problems, Romney trails President Barack Obama in most polls three months from the November 6 election, and may even be losing momentum. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week gave Obama a 7-point lead (49 to Romney's 42 percent), up slightly from a month ago.

Particularly enthusiastic backers of Ryan are opinion writers for the East Coast's leading conservative publications - like the Wall Street Journal, the National Review and the Weekly Standard. As if on cue, many of them weighed in this week in support of Ryan, almost daring Romney to pick him instead of more conventional short-listers, such as former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty or Senator Rob Portman of Ohio.

The case against Ryan, 42, is that he is a lightning rod for criticism of the unpopular cuts in government health programs for the elderly and poor he proposed as chairman of the powerful House of Representatives Budget Committee

That is not a weakness, the conservatives argued, but a strength. They want Ryan's budget to be the issue and they want Ryan there to defend it.

Such a debate, they believe, could elevate the campaign beyond questions that are consuming it now, about Romney's unwillingness to disclose more than two years of tax returns for example, or his leadership of the investment firm, Bain Capital.

"Mr. Obama and the Democrats want to make this a small election over small things - Mitt's taxes, his wealth, Bain Capital," the Wall Street Journal editorialized Thursday as it pushed a Ryan choice.

"To win, Mr. Romney and the Republicans have to rise above those smaller issues and cast the choice as one about the overall direction and future of the country."

"Ryan is an ideologue in the best sense of the term," the National Review's Rich Lowry wrote in Politico. "He is motivated by ideas and knows what he believes and why. But he's not blinkered. He is an explainer and a persuader."

Romney has a choice to make - go with the tried and true, Portman or Pawlenty, or take a bit of a risk with Ryan, or look elsewhere. Many expect him to announce his choice soon, possibly as early as next week when he winds up a campaign trip in Portman's Ohio.

    DEMOCRATS WELCOME RYAN

The risk of Ryan becomes apparent from talking with Democrats on Capitol Hill. While lawmakers and congressional aides from both parties use words like "smart," "telegenic," "young" and "exciting" to describe Ryan, Democrats seem him as a dream choice for different reasons.

"I would love for Romney to pick him," said one Democratic leadership aide. "It would crystallize everything for us. Just to have him on the ticket would even further elevate the Ryan budget."

That budget, which has been embraced by Romney, would reform the Medicare healthcare program for the elderly and disabled in a way that Democrats say would shift significant costs to those recipients. It also would cut deeply into other popular domestic programs, including education and the joint federal-state Medicaid healthcare program for the poor.

Another Democratic aide in Congress said if Ryan was the pick, "We could really with no effort wrap the Ryan budget around Romney." The aide added, "If he's not on the ticket we have to spend energy reminding folks" that Romney said he was in favor of Ryan's controversial budget.

Some Capitol Hill Republicans who support Ryan's proposals worry that the Democrats may be right about Ryan's impact.

"There is the practical political question as to whether or not we can truly win by being so blunt about the kind of changes most Republicans think have to be made to programs like Medicare," said a Republican aide who asked not to be named.

"It turns the election into an all-in bet," the aide said, adding, "The concern is that when you go all in, you can lose and be out of the game."

There's another concern as well: Ryan is the ultimate Washington insider in an anti-Washington era. He began his career in Congress as a congressional aide and has been in and around the Capitol most of the time since.

This week's editorials seemed in part designed to give Romney the courage to defy the conventional assessment of Ryan.

"That the hyper-cautious Romney is seriously considering him counts as one of the biggest surprises of a campaign almost entirely lacking in them. Picking Ryan would represent a Romney revolt against conventional wisdom. And appropriately so - since the conventional wisdom is wrong," National Review's Lowry wrote.

In the Weekly Standard, Bill Kristol and Stephen Hayes argued that the party "will be running on the Romney-Ryan plan no matter what. Having Paul Ryan on the ticket may well make it easier to defend the plan convincingly."

    CLOSE TIES TO PAWLENTY

Will the pressure on Romney over his vice presidential choice matter in the end? Probably not, said former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, a Republican political analyst.

"None of it matters - the only criteria should be whether the pick can become president and whether the relationship between Romney and his selection is strong."

If Romney were to pick the one person from among his short list with whom he has the closest ties, it would be Pawlenty, who quickly endorsed Romney after dropping out of his own race for the Republican presidential nomination last year.

Pawlenty, well-liked within the Romney campaign, has been an active campaign stand-in for Romney and was stumping for him in Michigan on Thursday.

Pawlenty is popular among evangelical conservatives whose active support Romney will need. Yet many analysts cite the fact that he failed to generate much excitement for his own candidacy as a strike against naming him as the No. 2. In 2008, he was passed over by then-nominee John McCain for the vice presidency.

"We'll know soon enough," Pawlenty told a crowd in Jackson, Michigan, on Wednesday, according to ABC News. Romney, he said, has a rich pool of conservative talent from which to choose and as a result he "can't make a bad pick."

If there is a tortoise in the race, it could be Portman, a brainy former White House budget director and former U.S. trade representative.

Many in Washington think he is the odds-on favorite despite misgivings about his ties to the George W. Bush White House. Picking him could help turn the tide for Romney in Ohio, a state he desperately needs to win and where he now trails Obama.

There is a long list of candidates beside Ryan, Pawlenty and Portman for his vice presidential running mate, whose most critical task will be to go head-to-head in a debate against sitting Vice President Joe Biden in October.

Among them are Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnnell.

The campaign has made it clear that an announcement could come soon, but has been coy on exactly when, a strategy that keeps interest in the decision high. Many believe Romney will announce the pick next week when the Olympics are over and after a four-state bus tour that starts in Virginia on Saturday and ends Tuesday in Ohio.

production technology: Special Reference and Education Press ...

Teachers have a significant role to perform in the development of a child's overall knowledge. A primary educator will be accountable for educating many of the necessary knowledge and style that a child will probably need to relate with the world and to comprehend his journey through completely different situations. The lessons in proficiencies like reading, writing, and dealing with mathematical problems will be developed as a child moves on to greater stages and will retain with him all through his daily life as a knowledgeable and educated adult. There's no doubt that an outstanding teacher provides a powerful impact on the basic foundation of a child's perceptive abilities, emotional progress, and over-all outlook in life.

Plenty of people have the abilities and the determination to expect this essential task, while some may choose to practice different but equally valuable tasks within the classroom. Instead of study and get qualification to become a teacher in a certain stage, individuals thinking about a teaching position can choose to employ for part time teaching job opportunities as educating helpers.

In the U.K., teaching assistants usually employment in primary, secondary, or special schools. They offer necessary assistance to educators, facilitators, and pupils through a different range of educating roles. In some organizations, assistants may have overall tasks within a school room, while some may be designated to manage the education of a selected pupil or of a specified group of learners.

Training helper jobs in nurseries or primary educational institutions can be routine chores such as setting up the school room before students come in, proving art and craft works, managing play and dining spaces, escorting kids while having open air routines or expeditions, organising details, and liaising with guardians, carers, along with other teaching professionals.

Typically, there are no set prerequisites for a educating assistant's skills, however, many organizations would favor that job hopefuls have nationally recognized credentials. They have to be at least Eighteen years of age to begin training in the field and those with applicable knowledge in nursery nursing and play task can be pondered. Volunteer assistants in schools can also train as teaching helpers at the same time. Job hopefuls with no previous knowledge in working with students or in education would be advisable to obtain distinct vocational skills.

Female boxers prepare for historic Olympic finale

LONDON (AP) ? Katie Taylor will fight for a gold medal Thursday in front an adoring crowd that's ready to hail the coronation of Ireland's sublimely talented boxer.

And her opponent, Sofya Ochigava, feels like she has already lost.

Ochigava and Taylor will meet Thursday in the in the lightweight final, one of three bouts to wrap up the first Olympic women's boxing tournament. US middleweight Claressa Shields fights for a gold medal against Russia's Nadezda Torlopova, and Chinese flyweight Ren Cancan meets Britain's Nicola Adams.

The five-day event has been a smash among fans and even across the Olympics, with the boxers reporting widespread attention from fellow athletes intrigued by both their novelty and skill. Ochigava isn't enjoying it quite as much, because she knows what's waiting for her at ExCel.

Taylor's biggest rival believes the Irish boxer gets much more help than she needs from referees, judges and even the highest levels of the amateur sport. That adoring crowd cheering her every move has an effect on the judges as well, Ochigava believes.

"When you go in to box against her, you begin with minus-10 points," Ochigava said in English.

Taylor is the unofficial best pound-for-pound fighter of the women's sport after winning four straight world championships with an entertaining style. Her two bouts in London have been blowout wins backed by an arena filled with thousands of rowdy, flag-waving Irish fans roaring at her every move.

But Ochigava is fed up with losing to Taylor in international competitions, most recently in the world championships in May. She knows the Irish crowd is a major advantage for Taylor in London, but thinks Taylor has plenty of advantages already.

"It's difficult," Ochigava said. "When you go boxing against Katie Taylor, you're not boxing with her. You're boxing with all judges around the table, and it's difficult boxing against all the system, but I will try like all other girls."

Taylor's crowd-pleasing style is tough to top, but Shields might be able to do it someday soon. The newest American boxing sensation is a cocky teenager with heavy hands, fleet feet and a serious mean streak ? and just like Cassius Clay, Joe Frazier and Oscar De La Hoya before her, Shields is about to fight for a gold medal.

The 17-year-old middleweight dominated Kazakhstan's Marina Volnova in the semifinals Wednesday. After pounding away at the slower Volnova for most of the 29-15 fight, Shields pounded her taped right fist against her own left shoulder and screamed with joy.

The London crowd loved Shields' combination of charisma, skill and strength ? a familiar formula for so many U.S. Olympic boxers over the years, but not lately.

"I'm still kind of shocked," Shields said. "I'm thinking in my head, 'Is it really true? Am I fighting for a gold medal tomorrow?'"

Shields is the last American boxer left in London after flyweight Marlen Esparza lost 10-8 to Ren an hour earlier, and she could give USA Boxing a much-needed boost. The ebullient teenager from Flint, Mich., is one of the sport's fastest-rising stars.

Less than two years after emerging on the American amateur scene, she won her second bout in three days with punishing right hands and relentless aggression, forcing Volnova to take a standing-eight count in each of the last two rounds after she was stunned by vicious combinations.

Shields laughed with joy at the verdict and raised both arms sky-high as she walked to the tunnel after beating up an opponent that wasn't much trouble for her, just as she predicted Monday.

"I was able to put my combinations together, land a lot of clean shots, punch straight," Shields said. "I took the best of her shots and made her miss a lot. I did what I wanted to do with her."

While Shields punched holes in Volnova's defense, Esparza found Ren impenetrable.

Ren's cautious defensive style in her win over the livelier Esparza got the U.S. off to an inauspicious start. The crowd finally got into it when Adams beat Mary Kom of India 11-6, and the ExCel arena turned raucous for Taylor, the Irish world titleholder and pound-for-pound champion of the women's sport.

Taylor didn't disappoint, dominating Tajikistan's impressive teenager, Mavzuna Chorieva. But Taylor didn't impress Ochigava, her longtime nemesis and gold-medal opponent, who said fighters "begin with minus-10 points" against the wildly popular Irish star.

Esparza gamely tried to force Ren into a fight, but the Chinese champion sat back dispassionately and threw counterpunches that scored just enough points to win. Ren's rigid strategy and Esparza's attempts to wait her out earned warnings for both fighters in each of the first three rounds for not throwing enough punches.

Esparza broke down in the fighters' tunnel after the bout, but soon turned her analytical skills on the only opponent who has ever beaten her in two straight meetings.

"It's as boring to me as it is to you," Esparza said. "Everybody can't stand it, but it works. ... I thought I did everything I could do. We knew she wasn't going to commit ? ever ? so the game plan was just to not go forward. When I did go forward, that was when I got caught."

Esparza, the 23-year-old veteran, insists she'll follow through on her plan to retire from boxing and go to college, even though she would still be younger than many of the world's current top amateurs when the Rio Games roll around in 2016.

"My body is falling apart already," she said with a grin. "I'm in sports medicine four hours a day."

Nanoparticle discovery opens door for pharmaceuticals

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? What a University of Central Florida student thought was a failed experiment has led to a serendipitous discovery hailed by some scientists as a potential game changer for the mass production of nanoparticles.

Soroush Shabahang, a graduate student in CREOL (The College of Optics & Photonics), made the finding that could ultimately change the way pharmaceuticals are produced and delivered.

The discovery was based on using heat to break up long, thin fibers into tiny, proportionally sized seeds, which have the capability to hold multiple types of materials locked in place. The work, published in the July 18 issue of Nature, opens the door to a world of applications.

Craig Arnold, associate professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University and an expert in laser material interactions who did not work on the project, said no one else in the field has been able to accomplish this feat.

With a new non-chemical method of creating identical particles of any size in large quantities, "the possible applications are up to your imagination," Arnold said.

The most immediate prospect is the creation of particles capable of drug delivery that could, for example, combine different agents for fighting a tumor. Or it could combine a time-release component with medications that will only activate once they reach their target-infected cells.

"With this approach you can make a very sophisticated structure with no more effort than creating the simplest of structures," said Ayman Abouraddy, an assistant professor at CREOL and Shabahang's mentor and advisor. Abouraddy has spent his career, first at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and now at UCF, studying the fabrication of multimaterial fibers.

The technique relies on heat to break molten fibers into spherical droplets. Imagine water dripping from a faucet. Glass fibers are perhaps best known as the cylindrical cables that transmit digital information over long distances. For year, scientists have been looking for ways to improve the purity of glass fibers to allow for faster, disruption-free transmission of light waves.

Shabahang and fellow graduate student Joshua Kaufman were working on just such a project, heating and stretching glass fiber on a homemade tapering machine. Shabahang noticed that instead of the desired result of making the center of the cable thinner, the material actually broke apart into multiple miniature spheres.

"It was kind of a failure to me," Shabahang said.

However, when Abouraddy heard what had happened he knew right away that this "mistake" was a major breakthrough.

While at MIT, Abouraddy and his mentor, Yoel Fink, a professor of materials science and current director of MIT's Research Laboratory of Electronics, said they were told by a theoretician that molten optical fiber should align with a process known as Rayleigh instability, which explains what causes a falling stream of fluid to break into droplets.

At the time, the MIT group was focused on producing fibers containing multiple materials. The team produced fibers by heating a scale model called a "preform" and stretching it apart much the way taffy is made. The process is known as thermal drawing.

Shabahang's experiment shows that by heating and then cooling multimaterial fibers, the theoretical became reality. Uniform particles that look like droplets are produced. Moreover, Shabahang demonstrated that once the spheres form, additional materials can be added and locked into place like LEGO building blocks, resulting in particles with sophisticated internal structures.

Especially significant is the creation of "beach ball" particles consisting of two different materials melded together in alternating fashion, similar to the stripes on a beach ball.

Kaufman, Shabahang and Abouraddy contributed to the Nature article in addition to Guangming Tao from CREOL, UCF; Esmaeil-Hooman Banaei from the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, UCF; Daosheng S. Deng, Department of Chemical Engineering, MIT; Xiangdong Liang, Department of Mathematics, MIT; Steven G. Johnson, Department of Mathematics, MIT; and Yoel Fink from MIT.

Some of the funding for the project was made available by the National Science Foundation, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities through a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
