News & Documentaries in a YouTube Era: LinkTV Launches World ...

This was a good point -- it also made me laugh -- so let's start off with Michael Gowan's lede for his TechNewsDaily piece today:

Web surfers have instant access to more news videos than ever before, but quantity doesn't equal quality -- especially when it comes to finding informed sources of world news. Maybe that's why people spend so much time watching cat videos.

I love cat videos, too (especially this looped GIF), but there's only so much I can take before I'm bored and seeking something more substantive. That's why it's great to be working at KCET, where I sit near the minds that create the in-depth videos behind "SoCal Connected" and Artbound, to name a couple.

Now that KCET has announced its merger with LinkTV, there's even more to be excited about in this regard. Today LinkTV announced the release of a major project a long time in the making: the LinkTV World News App. It's a free iPad app that brings together the best of broadcast world news reporting from over 125 news outlets.

It also features raw video taken by the public as events unfold, a very important and recent development in news, as highlighted by this Link video:

In addition to videos and their descriptions, the app uses semantic technology to surface short, relevant encyclopedic entries (marked as Topics) and related articles from over 50,000 international news sources.

Then there's the documentary tab for longer-form looks at issues. I just opened the app up and the first one is the 102-minute "Barack Obama: Great Expectations" about his first term in office. Next to that is Vice's hour-long giude to the Balkans (54 minutes) and next to that is the half-hour documentary that explores whether Miss Tibet actually highlights the country's issues or not.

And lastly, my favorite: the My Link tab. On any video you watch in the app, click the "Follow this topic" in any encyclopedic entry under a video and it becomes part of your own curated page. I'm currently following California, Anonymous, Hurricane Sandy, and the U.S. Presidential Election.

So, all that said, this is worth a download. And, hey, it's free! Give it a whirl here and let us know what you think (also, if you have Google TV, there's a basic version of the app that can be downloaded here).

Ghost stories part of the White House?s legacy

The White House is the best-known residence in the nation, and a few of its famous residents are rumored to be long-term tenants.

andrew jackson

Andrew Jackson - a reported White House spirit

Ghost stories have been part of the executive mansion?s heritage for over a century, and as we approach Halloween, let?s take a look at the top stories passed down from people who claimed to have bumped into some departed presidents and others.

1. Lincoln?s ghost

There may have been more sightings of Abraham Lincoln?s spirit than presidents who inhabited the White House, and some reports seem to be in jest.

But there are a lot of reports from workers at the White House and even Winston Churchill that they bumped into Lincoln wandering the building years after his death.

Lincoln was shot at Ford?s Theater in 1865 and died at a nearby boarding house. But it is his spirit that is reportedly stuck at the White House, where he planned the Civil War and had started planning reconciliation when he was killed just days after Robert E. Lee?s surrender.

The most famous Lincoln story is from Churchill, who was staying at the residence after World War II, the British leader had just emerged from a bath, wearing nothing and smoking a cigar. He reportedly met the late president.

?Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage,? Churchill allegedly said. He also refused to stay in the room after the encounter.

2. Jackson?s ghost

Another famous president who still could be seeking a longer term in the White House is Andrew Jackson.

The reported encounters with Old Hickory are not sightings but hearings. And what people reportedly hear from Jackson is a lot cursing from the 19th-century president.

One person who believed Jackson?s spirit remained in the White House was Mary Todd Lincoln, who held regular s?ances there after her son, Willie, died.

There was also a reported Jackson encounter during the administration of President Dwight Eisenhower.

3. Abigail Adams

John Adams? wife only stayed at the White House for a few months as its first occupant, along with her husband. Thomas Jefferson was the first president to spend a full term at the residence.

But some people believe Abigail Adams returns for an occasional visit to supervise the laundry.

Mrs. Adams used the East Room to hang out her laundry in 1800. A sighting of her was reported there during the Taft administration about 112 years later, when an apparition was seen carrying clothes in its arms.

4. Dolley Madison

The irrepressible Dolley Madison is best known today for rescuing the Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington from the White House before the British burned it down during the War of 1812.

But in ghost lore, she?s best known for reportedly encountering two gardeners during the Wilson administration a century later.

First Lady Edith Wilson asked the two to move the fabled Rose Garden, which Madison had created and nurtured.

The gardeners were reportedly met by an angry Dolley.

Today, the Rose Garden remains where Dolley Madison wanted it.

5. The British fire starter

The most traumatic incident in White House history was its destruction by British troops in 1814. A royal soldier apparently died in the attack after he helped set fire to the White House, and there are reports he occasionally returns to finish the job.

One incident was reported a few years after the Truman-era restoration, where the spirit was seen trying to set a bed on fire.

Also, there was a major fire in the West Wing during the Hoover administration on Christmas Eve in 1929.

Officially, it was a clogged fireplace flue that stared the blaze.

Even today, recent White House staffers reported hearing strange noises late at night in the White House. But there?s one president who probably hasn?t come back for a guest appearance.

James Buchanan openly tired of being president as the Civil War grew near.

?If you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to Wheatland, you are a happy man indeed,? Buchanan said just before leaving office in 1861.

Dana White is a really good tipper

UFC president Dana White is known as many things: entrepreneur, visionary, hothead, Pinkberry fan. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he also deserves the title great tipper.

White and the UFC have apparently cut ties with the Palms, the Las Vegas Casino that has hosted several of the UFC's smaller events. White's credit line was reportedly cut, and the biggest loser from the fallout is the staff. White was known to give exorbitant tips to dealers and waitstaff.

"He changed people's lives," said one of the sources ... During one two-month hot streak, White tipped dealers more than $100,000, sources confirmed. "Anytime he came in, we knew it was a big payday," a Palms employee said.

The Palms and UFC fans are also losers in this because their venues were fun places to watch fights. They have intimate venues that are nothing like the arenas the UFC uses for some of their bigger pay-per-views and Fox shows.

It was perfect for "The Ultimate Fighter" finale and Ultimate Fight Night events. Fans could get closer to the action. Diego Sanchez's memorable win over Clay Guida sticks out as one of the fights that was perfect for the Palms. Every punch, every blood drop that flew, every kick was clear to every fan in the venue.

Forex Traders: different profiles have different objectives by John ...

Currency trading can provide a significant source of income for some professional traders. But for other investors, foreign exchange transactions are simply an additional source of income that allows them to invest their hard earned money. With the growing popularity of currency trading, more and more individuals seek to use forex trading as an alternative investment vehicle, in a sense replacing stock market trading.

There are several types of traders in the foreign exchange market:

The first type of trader is the full-time professional trader. The majority of these traders are day trading, they invest in the Forex on a daily basis and are sometimes scalpers who profit from small movements of currency pairs using high leverage. These seasoned traders have extensive experience that allows them to develop effective forex trading strategies.

The second type of Forex trader does not really have time to do forex trading on a daily basis. These investors either do not have the time to monitor the financial markets themselves or are essentially long-term traders who wage their ?bets? on large forex movements. They do not really care about small foreign exchange fluctuations and trade with little leverage.

The third type of forex traders are slowly emerging in the world of forex investing, they prefer to let managers manage their accounts for them. These investors do not have time to study the financial markets themselves, but are well informed about the possibilities of profit or losses that may quickly occur in the forex market.

There are other types of traders who are not in the list because they are not individuals, such as hedge funds, brokers or hedgers who protect themselves to ensure a fixed price for their productions.

If you are interested in investing money on the forex market, make sure to set clear investment objectives. You must not only determine the amount you are willing to invest, but also the time that you can afford to devote to the study of trading. Your psychological profile and personality must determine your trading style.

Before you begin trading, you should make a short checklist containing, at the very least, the following: 1) define your trading strategy (hedging? scalping? trading with the trend? trying to identify tops and bottoms?), 2) find a broker that meets your requirements (for example, you may want a broker that allows scalping, or that allows you to trade mini-lots, or that lets you trade metals and commodities as well as currency pairs) and 3) make sure that the broker is licensed and accredited by a regulatory body (for example: the FSC in the Republic of Mauritius).

Embrace Social Media

I just finished reading an article written by Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of the Virgin empire. Branson discusses the importance of embracing social media, and mentions that only 16% of CEOs participate in social media and only one in 1700 have a blog.

This post got me thinking. My brother Marc (this is Tyler writing) has handled most of our social media outreach and I?ve been happy to let him do that. He was in college when Facebook first came online and he embraced it right out of the gate. I?ve been a bit slower in adoption, but Branson?s words strike a chord in me and I realize I too need to be out there contributing to our company?s social media presence. I need to contribute to the community that we?ve built and fostered and reach out to our clients and potential clients more through the social media outlets.

Anyway, this article motivated me. Read it and let us know what you think about Branson?s post. Agree? Disagree?

?Anyone who thinks new technology isn?t going to keep changing the world has got their head in the sand. We are seeing progress every day online, and businesses are doing their level best to keep up and get ahead.

However, when you get to the very top of companies, there is a surprising lethargy about using the online tools already available: social media. Embracing social media isn?t just a bit of fun, it is a vital way to communicate, keep your ear to the ground and improve your business.

So why are only 16% of CEOs currently participating in social media??IBM?s 2012 Global CEO Study found that most CEOs are clearly not taking social media seriously. Only one of more than 1,700 respondents had their own blog! Some are on LinkedIn, fewer on?Twitter and even less on Facebook, Google+ and elsewhere on the web.

The study indicated that within five years social media will be the number two way to engage with customers (after face-to-face personal interaction). That?s a step in the right direction, but why wait five years? The internet will have changed all over again by then, and business is in danger of being left behind.

It isn?t just CEOs that can make the most of social media. Where possible, everyone within a company should be engaged in what is happening elsewhere within their business, and in the wider world. Social media is a great way to do this. Also, it can furnish a spirit of community, not least amongst global, widespread companies.

Nevertheless, like all other areas of business, CEOs have the opportunity to set the bar. By ignoring social networks, they are potentially missing a trick.

There are lots of business leaders utilising social media, and yours truly is only too happy to be counted among them. But the beauty of the web is that there is plenty of room for everyone. Does anybody else want to join the party? There?s only one rule for entry ? no ties allowed!?

New McCaskill ad declares: 'Todd Akin is scary'

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill on Monday launched a Halloween-week ad casting her Republican challenger Todd Akin as "scary" because of his remarks about "legitimate rape." Akin, meanwhile, is gaining some outside help in his quest to oust Missouri's senior senator.

McCaskill's ad aired as Akin teamed up with Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe for a series of campaign events in the St. Louis area. Inhofe was attending an energy roundtable discussion and fundraiser, then touring an aerospace and defense firm with Akin. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Akin was to campaign in the Kansas City area with former House speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

McCaskill has not been on the campaign trail because she is spending time with her critically ill mother. But that hasn't stopped the first-term senator from launching new ads against Akin. Her latest begins with a woman proclaiming: "Todd Akin is scary." The ad then features a video clip from mid-August in which Akin says women rarely get pregnant from rape. Akin is shown saying: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Another woman in the ad says: "He has no idea how it even works and he wants to legislate about it?"

Akin has repeatedly apologized for his remark and said he was wrong, but the suburban St. Louis congressman has continued to campaign on his staunch opposition to abortion in all cases except when a woman's life is endangered.

During the energy roundtable, Akin said McCaskill has resorted to "desperate" claims in campaign ads.

"To me those huge government votes that Claire McCaskill takes are the things that are scary and I found myself very much in line with the commonsense of the people of the state of Missouri," Akin said, citing the opposition of many Missourians to health care reform and stimulus measures.

"A lot of these claims are I think baseless and I think the people are starting to write them off as baseless," Akin said of McCaskill's ads.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee and other deep-pocketed GOP interest groups dropped their advertising plans for Akin after the rape remark, and top national Republicans such as presidential candidate Mitt Romney called on Akin to quit the race. Akin instead forged ahead with his campaign. He has received support from Republicans, such as Gingrich, but has not regained the backing of Romney or the GOP's Senate campaign committee.

Inhofe is one who has stood by Akin.

"I maxed out (on contributions to Akin) in the very beginning and I stayed with him all the way through this thing," Inhofe said.

As a nod to Akin's reputation as a maverick, Inhofe said, "He's not going to be very popular in Washington. I'm not very popular in Washington."

Akin said he believes he is seeing support from women despite the rape comments. He cited the campaign effort called "Women for Akin" that has fanned out around the state and said he sees as many women as men at campaign events.

"It seems to me that women have the same interest in many regards as everybody else in society does," Akin said, citing economic issues. "We're talking about a bright hope for our children and all of our grandchildren and that doesn't happen when the economy is being shrunk and everything."

At the roundtable at McArthur's Bakery in St. Louis County, co-owner David McArthur told Akin that orders drop 5 percent to 10 percent when gas prices get to around $3.30 per gallon. He said raw prices for the bakery have increased 38 percent during Obama's presidency.

"All the small business people I know are just hanging on through this economy," McArthur said.

Inhofe said tapping recoverable reserves in the U.S. could have an immediate positive impact on gas prices and the economy. He said a swing of just a few votes in the Senate could have a major effect on energy policy and make the U.S. less dependent on oil from the Middle East "in a matter of months ? not years but months."

Leopard Seals Suck Up Dinner

Like whales, this Antarctic predator can strain small prey from the water with sieve-like teeth

The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is one of Antarctica?s top predators. It kills penguins and smaller seals by biting them with sharp canine teeth and repeatedly smashing them against the ocean surface to flay and dismember them. But it now seems that this seal is also equipped to tackle smaller prey.

David Hocking from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and his colleagues have shown that the leopard seal eats krill like a whale, by sucking them into its mouth and sieving them through special teeth. Other scientists had predicted this behaviour from the shape and arrangement of the seal?s teeth, but this is the first time that it has been observed and filmed. The researchers' results are published in Polar Biology.

By switching between two feeding styles, the leopard seal can dine from both the top and bottom of the Southern Ocean?s food web. ?This is equivalent to a lion hunting down zebras, but also regularly feasting on ants or termites,? says Erich Fitzgerald from Museum Victoria, Melbourne, who was involved in the study.

?You?d expect that leopard seals would sacrifice something in not specializing on either large or small prey, but the authors persuasively argue that it is a dual specialist,? says Alexander Werth, a biologist from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. ?This helps to explain why leopard seals are so successful.?

From whale to seal
Hocking, Fitzgerald and Alistair Evans from Monash University studied leopard seals because the animals' trident-shaped postcanine teeth are similar to those of ancient fossil whales, such as Janjucetus, and the researchers were interested in the feeding habits of these whales. Because the seals were thought to use their postcanine teeth to strain krill from the water, it seemed possible that prehistoric whales did too. But as Hocking searched the literature to confirm this, ?it became apparent that nobody had ever actually observed leopard seals underwater [while they fed] on small prey like krill.?

To do that, Hocking travelled to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, the only institution in the world that houses leopard seals. Once there, he presented the resident seals, Casey and Sabine, with four small fish sticking headfirst out of a plastic box. At her very first go, Sabine sucked a fish out and expelled the excess water through the sides of her mouth. Hocking called up his team: ?Yep, they do it, all right!?

Casey and Sabine repeatedly used the same technique. Their thick lips allowed them to create suction, and their interlocking trident-shaped teeth imprisoned ingested fish or krill when the animals blew out the ingested water. California sea lions lack such complex teeth ? when the same fish-primed box was presented to them, they often blew their prey out of the sides of their mouth along with the water.

There is indirect evidence that wild leopard seals behave in the same way as the two captive seals. The team examined the skulls of 26 wild-caught adults and found that, whereas their gripping canines were often worn down, the postcanines showed fewer signs of wear, consistent with their role as sieves.

Although the team saw the captive seals sucking only one fish at a time, it seems likely that the animals could ingest krill en masse by using their flexible necks to strike at the heart of a shoal. Krill can constitute up to 83% of a leopard seal's diet in regions in which larger prey are in short supply. One individual that was dissected was found to have more than 10,000 freshly caught krill in its stomach. ?That?s a lot of krill to catch one at a time!? says Fitzgerald.

Sandy: East Coast braces for epic hurricane, ?life-threatening? storm surge

Waves crash into a pier in Nags Head, N.C., Oct. 27, 2012. (Gerry Broome/AP)

[UPDATED: 6:00 p.m. ET]

"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."

Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, a "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 1 hurricane was centered about 270 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 530 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 15 mph.

[Slideshow: Latest photos from Hurricane Sandy]

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the immediate, mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan along the East River.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Sunday. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's message for residents was a bit more blunt. "Don't be stupid," Christie said Sunday afternoon, announcing the suspension of the state's transit system beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Earlier, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the suspension of all MTA service--including subways, buses, Long Island Railroad and Metro North--beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. New York City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the mayor said. The New York Stock Exchange said its trading floor will be closed on Monday, too--the first such shutdown in 27 years, according to the Wall Street Journal.

[Related: Superstorm could impact 60 million]

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest and southern New Jersey coastline on Monday--with the Jersey Shore and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.

"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

(FEMA)

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Carolinas to New England. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 500 miles--or roughly 1,000 miles end to end, making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," Jeff Masters wrote on the Weather Underground blog.

President Barack Obama received a briefing on the storm at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Washington on Sunday. "My main message to everybody involved is that we have to take this seriously," President Obama said. "[We will] respond big and respond fast."

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said on Saturday, announcing a state of emergency. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Meanwhile, emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.

In Virginia, Governor Bob McDonnell said 20,000 homes there had already reported power outages.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said FEMA director Craig Fugate said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."

Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some areas--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center summary, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.

The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene in September 2011, forecasters noted, was four feet.

Berlusconi threat to topple Monti shows party divisions

ROME (Reuters) - Former premier Silvio Berlusconi's threat to bring down Italy's government underscores deep divisions in his center-right party ahead of next year's elections and risks rattling markets which see Prime Minister Monti as Italy's saviour.

Berlusconi made the unexpected threat on Saturday, still fuming from his conviction 24 hours earlier on charges of tax fraud and a jail sentence of four years which he will not have to serve until all appeals are exhausted.

In a hastily called news conference he attacked the magistrates who convicted him as part of a caste of leftist "dictators" a vitriolic charge he has leveled many times before.

But then he trained his sights on Prime Minister Mario Monti's economic policies.

"We have to recognize the fact that the initiative of this government is a continuation of a spiral of recession for our economy. Together with my collaborators we will decide in the next few days whether it is better to immediately withdraw our confidence in this government or keep it, given the elections that are scheduled," he said.

Only three days earlier, when he announced he would not be a candidate for prime minister in next April's elections, Berlusconi said the Monti government had "done much" and was going "generally" in the right direction.

The Monti government of non-elected technocrats is supported by the center-left, the center-right and the center. It would lose its majority and have to resign if most of Berlusconi's PDL party withdrew support.

The possibility of a government collapse before elections scheduled for next April spooked financial and political commentators, who worried about market reaction.

"The damage would be enormous," Stefano Folli, editor of Italy's leading financial daily, Il Sole 24 Ore. "Damage in terms of political neurosis, international anxiety, threats to the stability law (the annual budget), and a general discrediting."

WORRIES ABOUT SPREAD

Monti has pushed through painful tax hikes, spending cuts and a pension overhaul to cut public debt which is running at 126 percent of gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Unemployment in Italy has risen to 10.7 percent, its highest level since monthly records began in 2004, and unions are locked in disputes with companies over plant closures and layoffs

Fabrizio Cicchitto, leader of Berlusconi's PDL party in the lower house of parliament, was cool to the idea of a government crisis, saying instead that the country had to avoid "an explosion" of the spread between German and Italian bonds.

On Friday, Italy's 10-year bonds were yielding 336 basis points more than debt of similar maturity issued by Germany, widely seen as Europe's safest. When Monti took over from Berlusconi in November, the spread was about 550, sending borrowing costs soaring to 7.6 percent.

The fact that Cicchitto and other PDL leaders did not rush to second Berlusconi's suggestion of a government collapse spoke volumes about the rifts within the party, divided between hard-core Berlusconi supporters and moderates such as party secretary Angelino Alfano.

The divisions meant the PDL would likely not vote as a united bloc in a no-confidence vote.

"I don't think Berlusconi has the numbers to topple the Monti government but he does have the numbers to make life very difficult for the government," said Rosy Bindi, president of the center-left Democratic Party (PD).

Some commentators said that if the Monti government did collapse, elections might be held in February instead of April. Monti has not commented on Berlusconi's threat.

Berlusconi, whose "bunga bunga" parties with aspiring starlets won worldwide notoriety, has taken a largely backseat role in politics since he was forced to step down, but he remains the dominant figure within the PDL, of which he is president.

Some political commentators said that by threatening Monti, Berlusconi may be trying to patch up relations between the right wing of his party and the Northern League. The League, a former Berlusconi ally, does not support the Monti government.

An important indication of the strength of Italian parties will emerge on Monday, when counting begins on Sunday's vote in Sicily to elected a new regional government.

Why Obama and Romney aren't talking about climate change

Analysis

posted on October 26, 2012, at 7:48 AM

Because Ohio is perhaps the most crucial battleground state, Obama and Romney are wary of seeming anti-coal in a state sometimes referred to as Coal Country. Photo: Ian Waldie/Getty Images SEE ALL 318 PHOTOS

"Scientists warn the planet is facing a global climate crisis that could result in unprecedented sea-level rise, drought, and food shortages," says Andrew Restuccia at Politico. "But you wouldn't know it from listening to the presidential debates." For the first time since 1988, neither candidate or their running mates talked about climate change or global warming in any of their four face-offs, and none of them were asked about it. The topic is also largely absent from the campaign trail: President Obama only occasionally brings it up, preferring to talk about the promise of green energy, and Mitt Romney only talks about climate change as a way to criticize Obama's policies. In September, the candidates told a group of science organizations that they believe that the earth is getting warmer, thanks in part to human activity, and that this is a big problem. So why is neither one talking about the issue?

1. All the solutions are politically toxic
It's safe enough to agree that the changing climate is a real problem, but "the two most effective ways of reducing global warming pollution ? taxing it or regulating it ? are politically toxic in a year when economic problems are paramount," says John M. Broder at?The New York Times. The Senate let a cap-and-trade bill die in 2010, in large part because "the Republican Party has essentially declared climate change a nonproblem." And it's harder to push for solutions given "a well-financed long-term campaign to sow doubt" about the scientific consensus that humans are responsible for rising temperatures. In short, there's little political upside to talking about climate change.

2. Voters like being in denial
"The easy answer is that it's not good politics... to talk about emissions when voters are worried about jobs," but that's missing a key point, says Laurent Belsie at The Christian Science Monitor. Polls actually show that Americans are increasingly convinced about the science of man-made global warming ? "the ranks of the 'climate deniers' are thinning, albeit slowly" ? but they also understand that there are no easy solutions. That makes global warming feel like "something to fear because we can't fix it." So if Obama and Romney aren't talking about the problem, maybe it's "because we really don't want to hear" about it.

3. It's all about Ohio, stupid
It's been clear for some time that the swing state of Ohio could well decide the election ? now it is the?must-win state ? and one of the keys to winning the Buckeye State is performing well in a "stretch of southern and southeastern Ohio where Democrats long held the allegiance of working class voters tied to the coal industry," says Nate Cohn at The New Republic. "The so-called 'war on coal' is a pocketbook issue" there, and Romney needs to talk it up to overcome Obama's advantages in other parts of the state. Obama has been hitting back by noting Romney's own anti-coal rhetoric from years past. That's left us with "the kind of bizarre reversal that only an election can cultivate," says Stephen Lacey at Think Progress, where both candidates "have run ads attacking the other for their previous comments on the need to transition away from coal."

4. Romney and Obama are letting surrogates make their case
"Every green group in D.C. has now pointed out 20 times apiece" this lack of talk about sustainable energy and climate change in this election, says Brad Plumer at The Washington Post. But "fortunately, there's a second-best solution for those who still want to hear more from the campaigns about this issue." In early October, E&E News and the MIT Energy Initiative hosted a wide-ranging discussion between energy advisers to Obama and Romney. It's "too bad that we couldn't get the actual candidates involved in a discussion like this," but if you want to know more about their policies on climate change, at least you can watch the surrogate face-off or read the transcript.
