Mutations in 2 Genes Linked to Rare Autism-Related Disorder (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Newly discovered mutations in two adjacent genes cause a rare genetic brain condition called Joubert syndrome, according to a new study.

People with Joubert syndrome have malformation or underdevelopment of the cerebellum and brainstem, resulting in a range of physical and mental disabilities such as poor muscle control and mental retardation.

As many as four in 10 people with Joubert syndrome meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis and other neurocognitive disorders, according to background information in a news release about the research.

In the study, a team led by University of California, San Diego School of Medicine researchers found that mutations in two adjacent genes -- TMEM216 and TMEM138 -- cause Joubert syndrome.

"It is extraordinarily rare for two adjacent genes to cause the same human disease," team leader Dr. Joseph Gleeson, a professor of neurosciences and pediatrics, said in the university news release. "The mystery that emerged from this was whether these two adjacent, non-duplicated genes causing indistinguishable disease have functional connections at the gene or protein level."

The researchers conducted evolutionary analysis and concluded that the two genes became joined end-to-end about 260 million years ago. The connected genes then evolved simultaneously and became regulated by the same transcription factors, the authors reported in the study published online Jan. 26 in Science Express.

UK port of Dover briefly closed by security alert (AP)

LONDON ? British authorities say the port of Dover was briefly closed because of an unspecified "security incident" to which the military's bomb squad was called in.

The nature of the incident wasn't immediately clear but Kent Police said on its Twitter feed that some weapons had been discovered in a car at Dover's Eastern Docks. It wasn't clear exactly what kind of weapons were recovered and attempts to reach a spokeswoman for the force by telephone were unsuccessful.

Police said in a later message that the alert had since been lifted and that the port was back open. Traffic remained heavy in the area.

Dover, on England's south coast, is one of the country's busiest passenger ports and a key maritime link to France.

OHI, Japan (AP) ? International inspectors are visiting a rugged Japanese bay region so thick with reactors it is dubbed "Nuclear Alley," where residents remain deeply conflicted as Japan moves to restart plants idled after the Fukushima disaster.

The local economy depends heavily on the industry, and the national government hopes that "stress tests" at idled plants ? the first of which is being reviewed this week by the International Atomic Energy Agency ? will show they are safe enough to switch back on.

But last year's tsunami crisis in northeastern Japan with meltdowns at three of the Fukushima reactors has fanned opposition to the plants here in western Fukui prefecture, a mountainous region surrounding Wakasa Bay that also relies on fishing and tourism and where the governor has come out strongly against nuclear power.

"We don't need another Fukushima, and we don't want to repeat the same mistake here," said Eiichi Inoue, a 63-year-old retiree in the coastal town of Obama. "I know they added stress tests, but what exactly are they doing?"

"I oppose restarting them," he said.

Other residents said that economic realities made the plants indispensable, including Chikako Shimamoto, a 38-year-old fitness instructor in Takahama, a town that hosts one of the region's nuclear plants.

"We all know that we better not restart them," Shimamoto said. "But we need jobs and we need business in this town.

"Our lives in this town depends on the nuclear power plant and we have no choice," she said.

On Thursday, an IAEA team visited a plant in the town of Ohi to check whether officials at operator Kansai Electric Power Co. had correctly done the tests at two reactors. The tests are designed to assess whether plants can withstand earthquakes, tsunamis, loss of power or other emergencies, and suggest changes to improve safety.

Their visit, at Japan's invitation, appeared aimed at reassuring a skeptical public that authorities are taking the necessary precautions before bringing nuclear plants back on line. After the visit, IAEA team leader James Lyons said its assessment would be released at the end of the month but deciding whether to restart the reactors was up to the Japanese goverment.

Some experts are critical of the stress tests, saying they are meaningless because they have no clear criteria, and view the IAEA as biased toward the nuclear industry.

"I don't view their evaluation as something that is trustworthy or carries any weight," said Hiromitsu Ino, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and member of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency's stress test panel.

The government idled most plants for mandatory tests and maintenance after the Fukushima disaster. Currently, only four of Japan's 54 reactors are operating. If no idled plants get approval to restart, the country will be without an operating reactor by the end of April.

Before the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that led to the Fukushima crisis, nuclear plants generated about 30 percent of the country's electricity. To make up for the shortfall, utilities are temporarily turning to conventional oil and coal-fired plants, and the government has required companies to reduce their electricity consumption.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has promised to reduce Japan's reliance on nuclear power over time, but it still needs some nuclear power until next-generation sources are developed.

In Fukui, 13 reactors at four complexes are clustered along a 55-kilometer (35-mile) stretch of coast with snow capped mountains facing the Sea of Japan. It's known as "Gempatsu Ginza," a phrase that roughly translates to "Nuclear Alley."

Only one of the 13 reactors is still running. The rest have been shut down for regular inspections required every 13 months. To start running again, they must pass the stress test.

Another hurdle will be gaining local support for the plants to restart. While local consent is not legally required for that to happen, authorities generally want to win local backing and make efforts to do so.

Fukui Gov. Issei Nishikawa, however, says he will not allow a startup of any of the prefecture's commercial reactors.

And the city assembly in Obama ? a town that briefly enjoyed international fame when it endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 U.S. presidential race? has submitted an appeal to the central Tokyo government to make Japan nuclear-free.

But officials in Mihama, another town that hosts a nuclear plant, have expressed support for the town's three reactors also operated by Kansai Electric, also called Kepco.

Fukui is a largely rural area, traditionally focused on fishing and farming, but it has a significant textile and machinery industry, and boasts of being a major producer of eyeglasses. Its nuclear power plants supply approximately half of all the electricity used in the greater Kansai region, which includes Osaka and Kyoto.

Several towns' fortunes are tied closely to the nuclear industry.

Community centers and roads are paid by the government subsidies for hosting the plants. Closing the plants not only means losing jobs for thousands of workers, but hardship for stores, restaurants and other service industries.

Many of those interviewed had family members, relatives or friends with jobs at the plants, and some refused to give their names due to fear of repercussions.

Noda has said the final decision on restarting nuclear plants would be political, suggesting that the government would override any local opposition if Japan's energy needs become dire.

Naozane Sakashita, a taxi and bus driver, said his salary had decreased "substantially" after the Ohi and other plants went offline.

"I think these idle plants should resume as soon as their safety is confirmed," he said. "Our jobs and daily life are more important than a disaster that occurs only once in a million years."

Still, he said he is concerned about the safety of the plants because his son works as a control room operator at the Takahama plant.

"If our economy prospers without compromising our safety, of course it would be best to live without nuclear energy," he said.

Cops: Fla. man arrested for gruesome Conn. slaying (AP)

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. ? A Florida man has been arrested for allegedly hacking to death a Connecticut man and eating the victim's eye and part of his brain, police said Wednesday.

Tyree Lincoln Smith, 35, was arrested Tuesday night on a Connecticut warrant for murder, according to police in Lynn Haven, Fla.

A property inspector discovered the body of Angel L. Gonzalez on Friday on the third floor of an abandoned home in Bridgeport, Conn., according to that city's police department. A medical examiner determined that the cause of death was blunt head trauma and ruled Gonzalez's death a homicide.

On Monday a cousin of Smith's in Connecticut contacted the Bridgeport police about Gonzalez's death. She told detectives that Smith had arrived at her house Dec. 15 and said he wanted to "get blood on his hands" before going to a park and then to the abandoned home, where he used to live, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The next day, Smith returned to the cousin's house with blood on his pants, hands and an axe, the affidavit said. Smith's cousin said he told her that he was sleeping on a porch at the abandoned home when we was awakened by a Hispanic man and invited inside. Then Smith described beating the man's face and head with the axe and collecting one of his eyes, a piece of his skull some of his brain matter, which he consumed in a nearby cemetery, the affidavit said.

The cousin told detectives she called Smith's mother, who notified police on Dec. 16 that they may want to check the abandoned home and that her son had "mental issues," the affidavit said.

Smith had left Connecticut for Florida on Friday on a Greyhound Bus, the cousin told detectives. Police and Smith's relatives reached Smith by telephone, and in a recorded call Smith admitted that he had been at the abandoned house and that he told a relative that he had killed the man, according to the affidavit.

Federal, state and local law enforcement officers took Smith into custody at an apartment Tuesday night without incident, Lynn Haven police said.

It was not immediately clear whether Smith had an attorney.

No decision yet on Gaddafi son's trial: ICC (Reuters)

THE HAGUE/TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? The International Criminal Court said on Monday it has not decided whether Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the overthrown Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, should be tried in Libya, contradicting earlier comments by a Libyan minister.

Libya and the international war crimes court appear to be at loggerheads over where Saif al-Islam's trial should take place.

Depending on the outcome, Gaddafi's most prominent son could either face the death penalty in his home country, or the prospect of awaiting trial in a comfortable detention centre known as "The Hague Hilton" in the Netherlands, with no risk of capital punishment.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Saif al-Islam last year after prosecutors accused him and others of involvement in the killing of protesters during the revolt that eventually toppled his father in August.

But when militia fighters captured Saif al-Islam in November, Libya said it wanted to try him at home.

The ICC has given Libya a January 23 deadline to confirm whether and when it would surrender Saif al-Islam and to give information about his mental and physical health. It also asked Libya to answer concerns, raised by activists, that Saif al-Islam was being held incommunicado, without access to lawyers.

ICC spokesman Fadi El-Abdallah said that the court had received information on Monday from Libya but declined to give details, saying it was confidential.

He added that the judges had not made a decision on whether Saif al-Islam could be tried in Libya, contradicting comments by Libya's minister of justice.

"Libya applied on Friday to the ICC for Saif to be tried in a Libyan court. The ICC accepted," Minister of Justice Ali Humaida Ashour told Reuters on Monday, adding that an investigation into Saif had yet to finish but his trial date would be announced when it had been completed.

Judge orders man to stand trial for Calif. deaths (AP)

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. ? A suspected serial killer will stand trial for the decades-old murders of four Northern California women.

A Marin County Superior Court judge ruled Monday that prosecutors presented enough evidence against 78-year-old Joseph Naso.

Naso is accused of killing two women in the 1970s and another two in the 1990s, and dumping their naked bodies in rural areas.

He was arrested last year, after a probation search of his Reno, Nev., home unearthed photographs, journals and other evidence tying him to the old slayings.

A Nevada State Police investigator testified that he believes Naso killed as many as 10 women.

Naso is acting as his own lawyer. He declined to call witnesses or take the stand during the preliminary hearing. In his closing argument, he called the evidence circumstantial.

Breast Cancer Treatment Causing Severe Lifestyle Changes ...

The advancements in the medical science have made it possible for the doctors and surgeons to save innocent lives from deadly cancer. But do you know that the women who have been saved from cancer in their earlier periods of life have suffered severe consequences?

Women, who are undergoing chemotherapy surgeries, are at higher risk of getting their reproductive system damaged. They have to plan their dates. Nicole Vazquez, who is one of those women who survived breast cancer in their earlier age, is struggling hard to cop up with her sex life.

While sharing her experience of having chemotherapy, Nicole Vazquez said,? I had a medi-port sticking out of my chest that I had to cover up? I didn?t have a boyfriend and now I would be bald. And after the chemo, I really looked sick. Self-image is a really big deal?.

She shared that soon after going through the chemotherapy she turned depressed and lost her self confidence. There is no doubt that breast cancer treatments have helped many women to live longer. But one also has to believe that the treatment does come with side effects or reactions.

Those women who go for breast cancer treatment before crossing 50 has to deal with a changed life style. Changes in life like, weight gain, reduced physical activity and psychological stress are some of the issues which a woman has to face.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer has become most common form of cancer among women, which causes death to a large number of women all over the world. It is hoped that with the passage of time, improvement in the breast cancer treatment would be made so that the negative aftermath of the treatment could be reduced.

Howard, Smith downplay trade ahead of Lakers game (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Magic fans will get a glimpse of the present and a possible future Friday when Orlando hosts the Los Angeles Lakers.

Center Dwight Howard's preseason trade request left fans bracing for the worst at the start of the regular season. Howard's agent Dan Fegan is permitted to explore trades with the Lakers, New Jersey and Dallas.

That puts a bigger spotlight on the matchup, given that the Lakers' Andrew Bynum has been the subject of speculation around a Howard trade.

Magic general manager Otis Smith remains adamant he's in no rush to deal Howard by the March 15 trade deadline. Smith said he and Howard haven't gotten in-depth about his trade request since training camp.

Smith expects Howard and Bynum to have their minds on the court and nothing else.

"I think both of those guys are probably the best two centers in the business right now and will be competing against each other, so I don't know if it's anything bigger than that," he said.

Howard said he's focused on improving the Magic's 10-4 record.

"This game is not about me and (Bynum), it's about our team trying to get better to win," Howard said. "That was a problem back when Shaquille O'Neal played. People tried to make it about me and him. That's not the case. We're just trying to play basketball and trying to win. The only thing that matters is who wins the game."

Provisions in the new CBA give the Magic the ability to offer Howard $30 million more than any other team. Orlando can offer him a five-year contract extension with 7.5 percent annual raises, while other teams are tapped out at offering a four-year pact with only 4.5 percent raises.

So the Magic could keep Howard through the deadline or sign and trade him to the team of their choice.

"Or he could still walk...with a $30 million dollar haircut," Smith said.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said he thinks Howard and Bynum are more than equipped for the trade spotlight. He noted Howard has dealt with it all season and Bynum handled it when Bryant flirted with a trade request in 2007.

Howard said he's focused on his job.

"I think most people wouldn't allow whatever their situation is ? especially what's going on with me ? to stop them from playing their normal way," he said. "It's just getting on the court and putting aside everything that's going on outside and what people are saying, trade rumors or what team I'm going to...Just put it away and go play basketball.

"So when I get out there on the court, it's go as hard as I can for as long as I can and trust my teammates when I get out there."

Smith said the real pressure may be on teammate Jameer Nelson. Howard previously noted a desire to play alongside other point guards, including Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

Nelson and Howard are friends, both entering the league in 2004.

But Nelson has struggled this season, averaging a career-low 8.3 points and shooting career-low 38 percent from the field.

"He has to play better, of course. But through all of this, he is the one taking the pounding," Smith said. "Right now, he's justifying the pounding because he's not playing well. But sometimes we forget in professional sports that they're people. Regardless of what we talk about, they're still human beings."

Smith said Nelson is injury-free, other than foot issues he's dealt with for several seasons.

"So as tough as he wants to be on the outside, on the inside ? all of them ? he's just a 30-year-old kid," he said. "He still has to work through the mental aspect of him taking a pounding. No, the center didn't come out and directly say it's on Jameer, but basically he has."

Even with needed improvements, Smith said he likes the direction so far.

"A real good team has to overcome a lot of things," he said. "A good team has to overcome a good player not being on par, a good team has to overcome a guy getting to the foul line a bunch of times and missing a lot of foul shots.

"So I imagine if we clear up those things, we'll be a much better basketball team."
